Can anyone tell me (measure for me) the VIEWABLE
screen area (height and width) on the 15" powerbook. I need the info
for a research project I'm doing and the new powerbook
is not readily available.
While I can get the machine dimensions from APPLE web site
and APPLE provides the DIAGONAL measurement (That's why its
called the 15 (actually 15.2") PowerBook -
Viewable screen dimensions are nowhere to be had.
Thanks for your help in advance!

With LCD monitors and laptop screens I believe the screen size advertised is the viewable area (unlike CRT monitors). I haven't actually gotten my ibook yet so I could be wrong though

TFT screens actual viewable size is the same as their stated size. So, the 15" PowerBook uses a 15.2" screen: its screen is 15.2" diagonal.

Scooters are more fun than computers and only slightly more frustrating

15.2".
With LCD screens, the measurement is for viewable area. Tube monitors, it realtes to the size of the tube. As an example, my 15" powerbook screen is pretty much the same size (actually a teensy bit larger) than the viewable area on my blue & white 17" Apple CRT.

Thanks for such quick replies
but I'm looking NOT for diagonal
length but actual length and
width of the viewable screen.
Anyone know or can measure theirs?

By the Pythagorean Theorem: 12.7x8.4" to the nearest .1"
FYI, here are formulas for DPI and viewable dimensions that will work even when comparing widescreen vs. normal-ratio displays:
H = horizontal pixels
V = vertical pixels
D = diagonal (viewable) inches
DPI = sq.root( H^2 + V^2 ) / D
Horizontal inches = H / DPI
Vertical inches = V / DPI
More than you wanted to know... a while back I used the above to make a list of all my options and help me compare:
Here are all Apple displays, in the order of lowest DPI (largest type) to highest DPI (tiniest type). To compare pixel areas, I've given each one's size in megapixels (H x V / 1 million). A display with twice the megapixels can fit twice the windows and tools. (DPI is rounded to the nearest pixel. HxV inch sizes are approximate within one-tenth of an inch.)

You're welcome. And don't worry, I compiled most of it for my own use long ago. Cleaned it up and added a few things to post in a forum a year ago... and then added a couple new models that have come out.
