I used to use software like Drag and Drop or Roxio to creat a copy of a cd in minutes. Now on my new alumbook15 I cant figure out how to do a basic CD copy Are there any built in utilities? I tried the disk image in os9 but it said the cd was corrupted when i tried to drag it into the program.

Any fee software like Toast?

Assuming you have Panther:

Load 'Disk Utility' (inside Utilities in the Applications folder).
Put in the CD you want to copy.
It will appear in the left hand list.
Click on the name of the CD, go to the Images menu and choose New > Image from "name of disk"
A disk image will be created on your desktop once you've given it a name (will end in .dmg).
When that's done, eject the CD as you're finished with it.
Go back to Disk Utility and choose this new file (the one ending in .dmg) in the left hand list and then click the Burn button top left.
Insert a blank CD and it should make a copy...

Thanks that worked great for the dmg file, but when trying to copy a music cd, it created the dmg, but when i burned that, it was clearly not the music cd.

Well assuming you're doing it for a legit purpose, I would suggest using iTunes. Change the prefs so that it imports in AIFF format, rip the CD to disk then burn a CD. Mac Help will have all you need to know.

One addendum to that -

I'm not sure if iTunes supports Disc At Once burning. If the CD you're trying to duplicate is a live show (I trade alot of live Phish, Dead, & the like) you'll want to eliminate the gaps between the tracks. Toast can support this. Basically, it'll burn the whole cd in one continuous pass, rather than a track at atime.

I guess i am not mkaing myself clear.

senario 1:

You have a music CD you bought from the store.

You want to make copies of it, EXACT copies, not compressed in any way, so there is ZERO loss in quality.

On pc's, you could duplicate this CD easily. Duplicate software cd's as well (we are licensed to do this on a number of applications).

That is what im trying to do.

You should get lossless music CDs when you use iTunes and AIFF as the format.

I would have to second ripping to aiff format. Or, just buy Toast. BTW, you might get better response in the software forum.

Get Toast, click create audio cd, drop cd onto main window, create a folder on the desktop, select all the tracks, click export, select newly created folder. When finished burn those tracks.
I use a PC for that kind of thing now tho with EAC+Nero, so much easier.

If you convert to AIFF in itunes there is no degredation in sound quality.
