I found this image on tweakers.net. It's actually about the fact that Microsoft is implementing XML structures into filetypes within Windows Longhorn, but this pic scared me. Though it is a .gif, i can definately see some ripping here...who agrees?

It's just a gradient, there is no brushed texture, the compression just makes it seem that way.

Why would they even want to copy brushed metal in the first place???? It's already ugly to begin with and Windows doesn't need more help in the making of an ugly UI department.

that's just a matter of opinion in my perspective. i'm using plain panther aqua interface 'til omega is released, and works fine for me. it matches my 17" PB. and MS should really be hiring some real graphic designers, cuz to be honest, it's not just a gradient. it's a bad ripoff.

Given the time frames involved do you really think any UI they show today is anything like what they'll create for the final product?

Don't forget that XP was being shown with Watercolor in development builds and then the XP appearance is what finally ended up in the box.

How is it possible for M$ to *steal* brushed from Apple? Does Apple *own* brushed? Apple sure as hell isn't the first company to use a brushed surface, and I"m sure they won't be the last.

Why do Apple users feel as they they have to play guard-dog for Apple?

I don't think later longhorn builds use this brushed interface, they use the lighter blue version of luna which they call "plex" or something like that.

Actually this one is from the PDC build of longhorn, Plex was in an earlier build and then there is another (newer) build which is under wraps that has Aero (white theme with a semi-transparent foreground titlebar\toolbar).

I recall reading that MS was going to have something like eight or nine different application classifications, possibly all having their own distinct visual style. (I could be wrong about the visual styles but I've seen a few different looks at this point)

Can you imagine that? Mac users think having Aqua and Textured is bad...

I hope it does come brushed, by that time we would have moved on, and hopefully to a far, far better style.

I think brushed metal is like painting flames on your car and XP currently, well it's the furry dice that hang from the rearview.

Apple seems to be adding applications specifications though like with garage band for example. Who knows how many more they will add.

Apple should "beta" some butt ugly version of OSX - make it look totally ridiculous. How long until M$ steals it and has the crappiest looking OS ever? I mean, crappier than Windows 95.
