Dice announces Mac BF 1942

Expect an official Aspyr announcement later today. Check your favorite Mac gaming site.

And before you start complaining about how you want BF:V instead and we always get old versions when new versions ship. Don't. It's annoying. We've heard it before. We don't need to hear it again. Mac BF 1942 is a good thing. Aspyr has fought long and hard to get this game for Mac. It's nothing but a good thing. It means:

1. We get BF 1942 and the first expansion pack.

2. Depending on sales we could get the 2nd expansion pack

3. and/or even get BF: V at a later date.

Excellent news. I've been wanting to play that one for awhile.

But why do we have to wait so long to get good games on the...

Ugh, as good a news as this is, its WAY too late. I've just built myself a PC mainly for Battlefield Vietnam. I guess I'll pass.

No, it's not WAY too late. The game still has a very strong online community. And there's still plenty of mods to keep it going. You guys don't seem to know how to do anything but complain. Ugh.

Yeah, the online community is still very strong but it's filled with hackers, griefers and lamers now.

BTW, most of the complaints aren't targeted at Asypr, they're targeted at DICE for not releasing the source code earlier

I'm curious what the final requirements are gonna be on this, as it requires a fairly beefy PC to get any kind of good performance out of it.

As for the online community, most vanilla BF1942 servers are indeed a cesspool of stupidity. Desert Combat is starting to get that way as well. I still really enjoy Forgotten Hope, and the few servers I regularly play on are well moderated by admins.

Battlefield Vietnam still has a ways to go on the PC side, but then again, it took a few patches for BF1942 to really shape up.

I for one am waiting to see what the mod makers do before I purcahse BF:V, as the regular games in both are too arcadey for me.

I'm sure many of the people aren't aware that DICE is the main factor the port is coming out now rather than sooner so many of the people complaining about timing are going to be pointer fingers at Aspyr.

No one is going to no the final requirements until the game is much much closer to shipping. Check out Aspyr's website for some prelim sys reqs though.

Preliminary System Requirements (these may change before the game's realease):
# Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later
# PowerPC G3/G4/G5, 700 MHz or faster
# 256MB of RAM
# 1.6 GB free disk space
# 3D Graphics Acceleration required (ATI Radeon 7500/nVidia GeForce 2 or
better, 32MB of VRAM)
# DVD drive required to install and play
Well, it might be playable on that, at a very low resolution. It is nice that they're looking to distribute on DVD though.

Hmm, I guess DC will have to make an installer for OS X...if course you can run PC mods. Lets hope mods aren't directly based On Direct-X.

I had it running on a P3 500Mhz system with 512MB PC-100 ram, and a Geforce FX 5200 PCI card, ran great

Agreed. I think the entire computer gaming industry is long past due to distribute the larger games on DVD rather than 3+ CDs. DVD drives & combo drives have been out for a long time now, and anyone who doesn't have one probably would not be able to run the game in the 1st place due to lack of other system requirements.

Can anyone tell me why this game is better than say, Medal of Honor? I haven't been keeping track of all these FPS's.

Vehicles in multiplayer. Player kits (medics, scout, anti-tank, etc) Up to 64 players in a single game depending on the map. I played a little bit on my friend's PC and it's pretty darn fun. No single player storyline to speak of as the game is pretty much designed around the multiplayer aspect (at least none that I noticed). Single player consists of multiplayer with bots.

Honestly it is a good game but you feel very lonely while playing the multiplayer unless you have a tight nit group playing the game properly, if its just random people logging in to play then it gets boring and unorganized rather quicky. But it CAN be one of the best online experiences with the right team going at it, I had alot of fun on it when I had a Wintendo box in the house, but I dont see myself getting the game on the Mac, already kinda tired of it

You should download the PC demo if you have a PC and try it out online, it is pretty fun

This is good news, but there's no way it's going to compete with MOHAA unless it's crossplatform.

With MOHAA I can join any game 24-7, and find plenty of players no prob.

This game needs to interface with the 3 million copies already sold on pc or else I don't see the point really.

The game will support Mac/PC multiplayer. Aspyr has already said so.

I'm really excited we could finally announce BF1942 Mac, we've been working on it for a while and it is an incredible game. We're putting all the resources we have internally behind this game, to make it the best online FPS for the Mac, period. We're working on all the big things - PC vs Mac play, mods like Desert Combat, performance, etc. It's going to be a great summer for Mac gamers!

Ok, Cool, I'm glad I was wrong, cause that is good news indeed.
I've never played BF1942 on pc, but it looks nice, and the secret weapons expansion pack looks sweet.

I'm looking forward to playing this game.

From what I can tell the mods are just models, maps, sounds, music, etc that are all launched from the bf executable. I can't imagine there will be much porting effort required for the mod makers.

If it sells well, BFV will be ported I bet. Already porting 1942 would make V a bit easier I would imagine.

I played this game tons back in the day when my PC used to be gaming worthy. It's well worth getting back into when the Mac version comes out. Sadly I don't think I have enough power to enjoy it. I'm jealous of all you PowerMac people.

Don't suppose there's much hope of getting the map editors in the Mac version, huh?

Yeah, apparently the creative market that makes up Mac market share wouldn't put those tools to use.

No. I've been in the business world long enough to know those decisions are usually dominated by the dead presidents.

It was more a sarcastic reaction to the fact that we never get the chance. I bet head-to-head against the PC market, Mac users would develop some butt-kicking mods to games.
