sorry if this is a) in the wrong place or b) a question people have asked before:
Is there a site with listings of powerbook component codes? I can't find a useful area of the Apple site, and "searchable" product code archives haven't proved great.
I've got an optical drive, under the barcode it says "8121A 678-0424" and then presumably an individual code. Which flavour of drive am I looking at?

Although I can't completely understand your question, I will try my best...

Since Apple introduced the PowerBook G4s, Apple has used the following optical drives:
DVD-ROM drive (I don't know which one that is)
Combo drive (CD-RW/DVD-ROM), manufactured by Matsushita (Parent company of Panasonic), model number CW-8121
SuperDrive (CD-RW/DVD-R), manufactured by Matsushita, model number UJ-815/816

So your drive is probably a CW-8121.
