I just got a new PowerBook from Apple, because my old one had a lot of problems with white spots.

Now, on my new PB, after I set preferences for all of my Apps (Safari, Fire, Mail, and even Mac OS X in general) none of them stay. They save and then a few hours later, they're gone.

I'm installing the OS update right now, will that fix it? If not, what will?

Check that you have write access to the Preferences folder.

Try running a permissions repair in Disk Utility.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I have this problem when my hard drive has less than 1-1.5 GB free space. Doesn't sound like you've had that much time to fill up the drive though.
