I was just curious, does anybody own a G5 with 8gigs of ram? Was wondering what 8gigs ram can do in processing a 500meg photoshop file.

Yep youre right, but does anybody know when we will see some true 64-bit applications in OSX? Or are there already some?

Interesting way to put it. I'll wait for some more advice and then i'll decide. I swear sometimes i wish i lived back in the sixties, smoke a dopey and enjoy bob dylan's music, sit back and relax.

I've been through 17 computers over a period of 4 years. I don't know about you guys but thats hell of a big number.

Somehow these statements seem incongruent. Personally, if I were in your shoes I'd wait for either:

1) A cheap dual 1.8 refurb shoes up. This happens every so often. It's above your $1600 budget, but if you've been able to afford 17 computers...
2) Apple updates the G5 line - probably in a couple of months. I'd take a single G5 2.0 over a dual G4 1.25 any day.

It sucks.

I went through so many machines because I could never make up my mind on what I wanted (PC, Mac - notebook, desktop...). And because of that, I never developed a 'connection' to my machines. When I first got into computers, I felt something special about my machines because I knew them inside and out and understood their quirks and what not. But when you roll through so many machines, they just seem less personal. So by having so many machines in such a short period of time, I kinda lost that 'connection' feeling that helped get me into computers in the first place. But I have had my current QuickSilver since early December, and it is the longest I have had any machine for 2 years. It is starting to feel like my machine. And with the processor upgrade that I got it, I think I will be keeping it for a while to come, so hopefully this little guy gives me back some of the computer bonding that I have missed.

(God that was stupid... I'm sorry)

I tend to keep computers for about 2.5 years, though I usually have more than one at a time.

Kept a Quadra 605 for three years (my first Mac - replaced an Apple //gs),
a PowerComputing Power100 for 18 months,
a PowerComputing PowerCenter Pro for two years,
a Yosemite G3 for three years (but has recently been put back into service as a web & file server w/ a faster processor & big HDs),
a 400Mhz Pismo PowerBook G3 for 2.5 year,
a Dual 800MHz G4 Quicksilver for two years,
a 600 Mhz iBook for 2.5 years (about to be replaced with a new 12" PB G4),
a 1GHz TiBook for 18 months,
and a dual 2.0GHz G5 so far for 6 months (and my wife would castrate me if I attempted to replace that any time soon).

My two favorites have been the Dual Quicksilver and the Dual G5.

Also presently have two iMacs in the basement for the kids - an original Bondi blue (266MHz) and a graphite iMac DV (400MHz). Considering adding a $749 (edu price) eMac 1.25GHz to the mix.

I've also owned two PCs in that time; a Dell 1GHz Pentium III and (my present PC, which doesn't get much use) a home-built AMD AthlonXP 2600+.

Fortunately, I've only had one wife in all that time. As much as I may spend on computers, a new wife would be even more expensive And I don't plan on spending that much

Let's see... if we start in 1984 when I was 9, I've been through 7 computers in roughly 19 years.

In 1984 we got an Apple //c (IIc)... was our main machine until 1987, when we got an Apple IIgs. I used that machine as my main system until 1996(!)... of course, when I went to college in 1993 I souped it up a bit... bought a 125 MB hard drive, a 4 MB RAM card, and a $50 driver package to allow it to print to a $750 HP DeskWriter 550c printer.

In 1996, I bought a Power Macintosh 7600 (though my mother bought a Performa 450 in 1993 for her business). The 7600 I used all the way through medical school as my main machine, but in 1999 I bought a PowerBook G3 as well.

When I graduated medical school and started internship, I bought a Power Mac G4 QuickSilver 2001 (867 MHz). I replaced the PowerBook G3 a year ago with a Titanium 1 GHz PowerBook G4, and replaced the G4 PowerMac in February with a G5.

So... (as the main machines I used)

Apple //c: 3 years
Apple IIgs: 9 years
Power Macintosh 7600: 4 years
PowerBook G3: 3 years
Power Mac G4: 2.5 years
PowerBook G4: 1.25 years
Power Mac G5: less than 3 months

Our family as a whole has gone through more machines, and hand-me-downs

Let me try:

1984: Apple IIe
1988: Mac SE
1990: Mac IIsi
1993: Powermac 660av
1995 Powermac 7500
1999: Tangerine iBook 300
2001: iBook/600/DVD
2001: Powermac G4/450
2001: Pentium III 750
2003: Powermac Dual 2GHz G5
2004: iBook/900 Combo

Some of the dates may be off (going from memory), but the first and last are correct. So between 4th grade and now, I've had 11 machines. I've also got a Classic II, an original Mac portable, and my wife's Celeron 366, but I've never really used any of them for any real work.
Mac Pro 2x 2.66 GHz Dual core, Apple TV 160GB, two Windows XP PCs

What does one usually use a computer for?

Word processing, internet browsing, medical software, games (I still have time to play games every now and then, and I like to have a serious gaming machine as much as the next guy...)

My list:

1st computer, Sinclair Spectrum ZX+ (around 1987 or so I must have got this);

Sinclair Spectrum ZX+3 (with a floppy drive! circa 1989);

Commodore Amiga A500 (circa 1991, still going strong and used to play the best game of all time);

Mac Performa 6200 75MHz (1995/6);

Powerbook Lombard 333MHz (1999, still in everyday use. And I mean every day);

All the above machines were purchased new. The first Spectrum was sold to pay for the second, and the second paid for the Amiga. I still have the rest.

In 2003 I inherited a Pentium3/450MHz (My first windows machine);

This year, I have purchased the following from eBay:

AMD Athlon 1200MHz (graphics card didn't work, but I only bought it because it was cheap and four times quicker than anything else I had);

Powerbook Pismo (bought in Pieces, still needs a working CPU and neither of my logic boards will currently run a HD);

PowerMac G3 B&W 400MHz, again bought in bits, but they haven't all even arrived yet, so no idea what works and what doesn't.

Taking a Mortgage out soon and the temptation to buy a new Mac at the same time is enormous.
Can't decide between a PB and a G5. I'll listen to advice if anyone wants to give it, but don't ask me what I intend to use the new machine for, because I can't really justify buying either. My Lombard still does more than I really need it to.

I guess if we are seeing who's is longer:

1985 - Commodore 64
1987 - Laser Compact XT (keyboard, cpu, 5.25 floppy all in one, I still have it)
1993 - 286 w/1MB memory and 20MB hard drive running DOS 5
1999 - PowerBook 540c (one of the sweetest PB's of all time)
1999 - PowerMac 6500 (still have it)
2000 - PowerBook 3400c (gave to my mother)
2002 - Blueberry iBook (my best friend owns it now)
2002 - 1.2GHz PC (POS and sold)
2003 - iBook 700 (gave to my mother when the 3400c took a dive)

Somewhere in all this crap was an Atari 800 and a Commodore 128. Plus all the vintage systems I picked up just to have something to play with.

These are the systems I currently have:

iMac 17" 1.25GHz
IBM 300GL P2 450 (Linux box/toy)
Blueberry iMac 350 (Linux box/toy)
iBook 900

Next stop either a PB G5 or a PM G5. That's going to be a couple years though.

It looks as though I live a sad life

Hmm, I'm starting to wonder why nobody seems to have gone from C64 to Amiga to Mac, which I had though to be the most natural way for a Mac user. Maybe that's only true for Europe?

I've been an Apple user since the beginning. Got my first computer, an Apple ][+, in 1982. Moved my way through the Apple II line until the //gs was discontinued.

The thing that pisses me about apple systems is that they don't offer a variety of 3D programs, specially autocad. Then i have to use a pc for such programs and im not fond of pcs anyways.

Everyone that wants a Mac version of Autocad or similar apps should write or e-mail to the company, it won't happen by talking about it.
I bet 99% of people that have complained some app isn't available on the Mac haven't bothered to contact anyone to express their interest.

This memory was spread over many arrays, so perhaps the limit is really on the size of any individual data array.

PTC offers an OS X version of Pro/CONCEPT. You can download a demo of it from their website:

http://www.ptc.com/appserver/it/icm/...=y&keyword=701

PTC recently hinted that it might even port Pro/E to OS X.

More true for Europe, I think.

The C64 was viewed (at least by the Apple II crowd) as a "toy" computer.

I always found it amazing how much could be done on the C64. GEOS did amazing things using only 64k of RAM and most of that is used for system functions. At the time the PC needed at least 512k-640k to do the same thing.
