Possibly a dumb question.

Got my first scratch on my PB today. The client I was visiting had one of those desks made of glass with sharp edges, which I brushed the PB against

The PB is still fully functional of course, but does Apple sell the aluminum PB case parts to customers? Or will they replace the casing as a repair? I'm aware cosmetic damage doesn't fall under warranty, so I'm fully aware that if they indeed do this kind of thing, it'll cost money.

scratches are not an issue to apple, only dents that make things stop working. if you show it to an apple rep. and tell them that it still runs fine, even with the scratch, they will not care about it. or you can say it wasnt there when you checked, and you want the scratch removed.

Yeah.. Apple won't really care about the scratch. If the scratch really bothers you.. you might want to check out places that sell PB parts.

I dont' know how comfortable you would be with repairing it yourself, but i'm sure you could find a place to do it for you.

Will Apple sell you the parts? Not a chance.

Will a sympathetic Apple authorized repair place sell you the part? Maaaaaybe, if the parts are even available, if you catch the right guy, and it's the right phase of the moon. They're not supposed to sell people parts, but a few will do it anyway.

That said, on many models, Apple only does in-house repairs for a period of time, only letting authorized repair centers get parts many months later.

And if a PowerBook (under AppleCare) case is damaged just near to the dvd drive?, if that prevents the right operation of the dvd drive, what do you think Applell do:

- just replace the dvd drive
- replace dvd drive and the damaged case

it really depends on how the case was damaged. if it bent through normal use, they will replace the case part. if it was dropped, they will charge you.

Apple will repair anything if you want to pay. This would be a Tier 2 repair:

Don't worry; if you get enough scratches or especially any little dents or deformations during your AppleCare period they will be glad to charge you all that money even if it's unrelated to your problem.
