OK, we all know that some of us on here own a PC (not including the PCs you may use at work). Here's the thread on which to boast.

So go on, list the specs in all their 1337 goodness.

I'll step up and g33kify myself first...

All home-built goodness:

-Athlon XP 2600+ w/ Zalman superflower copper silent HSF
-Asus A7N8X deluxe 2.0 n-force 2 motherboard
-512MB Corsair Twin XMS RAM (dual channel)
-ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
-120GB WD 1200JB HD
-Pioneer DVR-107D DVDRW (black)
-Sony 40x/16x DVD-ROM (black)
-Sony FDD (black)
-Zalman 450W silent PSU
-Directron SF-201 aluminum case (but w/out windows)
-Black Microsoft Office keyboard
-Black/leather Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0
-Dell 1800FP LCD
-Logitech Z-560 THX speakers
-Logitech QuickCam
-WinXP Pro & MandrakeLinux 10

Case has been modded with sound insulation foam from QuietPC.com, rubber mountings on intake and exhaust fans & rubber power-supply gasket to reduce vibration-induced noise, low RPM 80mm case fans and a low RPM 120mm CPU fan. Its almost "Dell quiet."
Its a very fast PC, and Mandrake really flies on it. For many things, my G5 is faster, but this machine still does a good job keeping up with the big boys.

I have a P3 450 that I bought from a friend. It was from a Mom and Pop store. I've had it overclocked to 600 MHz for a few months now and it works great for NHL 98 and Monkey Island.

1GB DDR 266 Dual Channel
250GB Maxtor HD
ATI Radeon 9600XT
Soundblaster Audigy 2
Sony DVD/CD-RW
Sony Floppy (ZOMG!)
Shuttle SN45G case

Everybody thinks I use a really fast PC. Nothing could be further from the truth. Every now and again I might build one of the fastest PCs on the planet - but speed alone isn't much fun. Once you run some benchmarks and stare in awe at the numbers for a few minutes, you've pretty much used up all the fun.

So that's why I prefer machines with character. My current rig is the absolute pinnacle of character and old-school charm. It's a dual Celeron 466MHz using an Abit BP-6 motherboard, in a generic beige plastic case with the sidepanel removed for ventilation. The Celerons are overclocked slightly to 500MHz and are equipped with vintage 'Golden Orb' heatsinks that were modified to clear the protruding capacitors near the CPU sockets.

The graphics hardware consists of a vintage ATi All-in-Wonder card (1st generation) with a TV-tuner and breakout cables for A/V in/out. It's upgraded with a 4MB plug-in memory module (rare), bringing the total video memory to 8MB. All 3D tasks are offloaded to a Diamond Monster 3D II PCI card, which has a massive 12MB of RAM (split among 24 chips) - and does not support pixel shading. heh.

When I'm feeling really nostalgic, I install my pair of 3DFX Voodoo-2 cards and connect 'em with an SLI cable. 12MB *each*, yo. Phat X 2. Too bad it isn't supported under WinXP. Gotta boot into 2000 for some V2 luvin'. Oddly, XP supports the ancient All-in-wonder/Monster II setup. I'm using it now. And watching Discovery channel while I type this.

My 'spare' PC is a bit more modern. I use it to host hillbillytechnologies.com and I use it as a personal fileserver. It's a dual Athlon platform using a Asus A7M266-D motherboard with a mismatched pair of processors. One is a Athlon Thunderbird 800MHz and the other is a Athlon Thunderbird 1000MHz. They run overclocked, yielding 880MHz & 1100MHz. Neither processor is "MP-capable" according to AMD - although they work perfectly - and pre-date the 'real' AthlonMP by a year or two. The heatsinks are copper CoolerMasters with a pair of U-shaped heatpipes. Dunno about the model number. I remember they cost over $100/pair at the time. They must be *phat* because everybody that sees 'em wants to buy 'em from me.

Oh yeah, and I'm trying to complete the 'Deliverance' project in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for that one. Dual mobile Athlons upside your head. High efficiency meets high clockspeed. And then they fall in love. At least that's the plan.

I could talk about my peecees forever...as evidenced by this post.

the only 17" CRT with a 17" viewable area? I mean, you can see the whole freakin face of the tube.

I just bought an HP Kayak Dual P3 500 workstation to use it as a FreeBSD/DragonFly BSD box. Mostly as a storage server/little helper (mail server, etc.) and just to be able to tinker with FreeBSD. Should be fast enough for most things.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

A 486 laptop.,.. ibm thinkpad 350. Haven't used it in ages.

A 75mhz toshiba P1 laptop.. runs windows 98, I use it for internet in my bedroom when I feel like chatting.

A P166 board in my PC case. It's like a caddilac with a pinto engine. The board fails every 30 minutes and after having checked every heatsink I can't figure out why (thus it's going to get trashed soon) -- hopefully replacing with a gigabyte board and athlon 2500

A celery 900 machine -- gave it to my brother for game and internet entertainment

I used to have more but it's pretty much all been on the way out. Some stuff just got so worn out or useless I ended up dragging it around until I got sick of it and threw it out.

A P2 400 mhz toshiba satellite from 99, maxed out at 192 mb ram. From back when Toshiba still made decent laptops.

Runs Windows 2000, never had any real problems with it, actually.

I agree with the others who said that was a stupid comment.
I have two iBooks, a G4 and a spare graphite. I use my "external" hard drive (actually have two as I upgraded a few months ago) as a backup for my hard drive and iPod music content (about 5,600 songs(.
The other I use to store raw video footage from my digital camera as well as stuff I'm playing with in GarageBand.
I also have an external keyboard, monitor, scanner, printer and trackball so I can have the best of both worlds with my portability and a desktop flavor (and not a peecee in sight).
Obviously you don't know much about what other people might need and use after all.

I recently gave away 2 of my pc's to guys working on the house. One was an Athlon desktop (1.6 GHz) in need of a bios update. The other was a Sony Vaio laptop with a P III 450 MHz processor. I has upgraded the hard drive and installed Linux but never used it. I currently am keeping an IBM ThinkPad lying around. It's the A22m model with a P III 850 MHz processor and WindowsXP. Mostly just to keep an eye on what those bastards in Redmond are up to. I have to say, WinXP is not the steaming pile of dung that Win98 was, but it can't hold a candle to Mac OS X IMHO. Maybe if I was a serious gamer I'd feel different, but for digital photography and digital video I'll stick with my Macs.

What kind of PC do you have?
A sick Celeron 1.4 Tualatin on a tarted up BX mobo... with its guts on my floor... I'm disappointed at the lateness of the G5 iMac, since instead of repairing the XP box yet again I'm tempted to just replace it with a Mac and go completely PC-less at my house.

Take it from me...the guy in charge of what's cool in PC-land.

External hard drives and optical drives are on the opposite end of the spectrum - light years away from 'cool'.

Nothing says "I'm cheap" quite like owning an external drive. There's a stigma of inelegance and 'make-do' attached to it.
Like wearing brown socks with a blue suit. It just looks universally wrong. Because it is.

"But, Spliff, I need to be able to carry 80GB of data with me. It's important."

Nothing like having important stuff on a hard drive. That wasn't made to be transported. being transported. If your stuff was truly important you wouldn't be toting it around on an external hard drive, now would you?

[external hard drive owner]"It's important that I get this package from Minnesota to Hawaii overnight. That's why I'm shipping it by pack mule."[/external hard drive owner]

So, yeah, go ahead and pretend it's cool to own an external hard drive. That'll make one of us that's convinced. The only folks left laughing will be the rest of us. You know, those of us that know what's cool.

Well I'm a Mac guy for sure. Have a Quicksilver dual G4 1.3 and a very old iBook 366 Clamshell that I use for email and IM purposes.

However, I bought a Sony VAIO Pentium 4 3GHz with HT about 4 months ago for gaming. I actually like this PC quite a bit but I'm to scared to actually use it for email.

Heh. Spliffdaddy, not sure what your beef against external drives is, but its humorous. Depending on the work a person does, they are invaluable. Lets not forget, thats the ACTUAL reason some people use a computer; not just to stare at it, or fixate on its stats, but to do WORK with them.

Youd be out of your mind not to use external storage when you do a lot of video and high-end graphics work. The very nature of such business is collaborative coupled with huge amounts of data to be shuffled around. What are you kidding me? Youre going to pretend that shuffling truly gargantuan amounts of video data around is easier through a network? Or maybe from location to location via the internet? ("Sure thing, I'll have that stuff over to you in a couple of weeks!" Bwahaha!)

I shuffle huge projects around between three offices (2 workplace, 1 at home) all the time, and work with plenty of others that do the same. What the hell else would you use besides external HDs? Stacks of DVD-Rs?

Speaking of which, I much prefer an external DVD-R that gives all my computers DVD burning capabilities whenever and wherever I happen to need it, compared to single units stuck internally in one system.

As for PCs I own/use a range of PCs from an Athlon 64 3200+ to a few older Athlons ranging from 2800+ down to a 900mhz Thunderbird. All built myself, and stuffed with a wide range of components too lengthy to bother listing.

As for PC laptops I own an older Toshiba Portege 3010 which is feather light and a perfect writing machine. Other than that, besides my trusty Powerbook, I own several handheld HPCs.

I'm mostly sure it's a 600MHz Celeron.
I'm completely sure it says HP Pavilion XE743 on the front.
There are no copper tubes anywhere in site, so it's not ****ing cool

Like wearing brown socks with a blue suit. It just looks universally wrong. Because it is.

"But, Spliff, I need to be able to carry 80GB of data with me. It's important."

Nothing like having important stuff on a hard drive. That wasn't made to be transported. being transported. If your stuff was truly important you wouldn't be toting it around on an external hard drive, now would you?

So, yeah, go ahead and pretend it's cool to own an external hard drive. That'll make one of us that's convinced. The only folks left laughing will be the rest of us. You know, those of us that know what's cool.
that was even stupider than the comment you're trying to defend.

I got an old PIII 450 IBM mini-tower they were throwing away at work. Stuck an ATi Radeon 9000 in it, now it's my Worms Armageddon box (and occasional Mac-version-of-Windows-Media-Player-and/or-RealPlayer-won't-play-this-file media player).

Otherwise, it spends its time turned off, sulking next to my Macs.

Um my PC is from early 2001, custom built:

1Ghz AMD Thunderbird
256meg SDRAM
30 gig HDD
GeForce 2 MX
DVD player
CD burner
10/100 ethernet
internal 56k modem
Windows 2000

I am surprised how well it is still running

One just wasn't enough.

Slowest is the laptop, a p3 650.
Of the towers, the slowest is an athlon 2000. There's also 3 athlon 2200s, 2 athlon 2400s, 2 athlon 2500s, and 2 athlon 2600s. Most are overclocked at least slightly, with some more then slightly .

Yes, but if I refer to a mac as a "PC" to damn near anyone here, I'll get flamed to hell and back.

Ha! Talk about a contradiction.

Yeah, putting copper tools on a monitor is so cool (if you're 13 and don't like girls yet). Besides, some people care more about useful and practical.

No, doing things like your Dukes of Hazzard Dell makes you look cheap.

Obviously, you know little about what computers are used for. Some people use them for graphic design, some for video and some take work home and back to work. I guess that's too much of a concept for you to glean.

That scores a 99 out of 100 on the Unintentional Comedy Scale.

But you do seem quite suited for the PC world, someone who thinks they know something about something when they really have no clue whatsoever.
