Hi, Could someone (everyone, anyone) please recommend a good desktop publishing program?
I need one that's similar to MS Publisher (shock horror!!) that has templates for diffrent things. I guess one that's easy to use to start with but still has the power to do stuff from scratch.
Thanks in advance.
Something that's cheap would be nice too.

You could try out Ragtime Solo which is free to use for personal projects.

Ragtime has some rave reviews and looks good. I haven`t had the opportunity to use it myself.
One that I have used and can also recommend is
Desktop Publisher Pro ..
You can find it at www.macupdate.com
I don`t think either of these programs have ready to use templates

I think Stone Create fits the bill.

If you have some cash (actually for what they do, they're reasonable priced) and don't want to mess around, InDesign CS and InCopy.

You can get decent results with AppleWorks. It's very underrated for this kind of thing.

It depends upon what you are trying to do.
Things for the Web, PDF or to print on your local laser printer, etc.
Use whatever works for you.
If you are going to be sending to a printer, use InDesign* or Quark** (anything else, and expect problems [font, image, color etc.])
InDesign is a great application
Quark is my application of choice (mainly because I'm old school)

Nowadays, "things to send to a printer" and "things you're converting to PDF" are often one and the same.
Also, it's worth noting that InDesign is pretty laggy on anything slower than maybe 800 GHz, and I'm told Quark 6 is similarly high-end (not to mention ridiculously overpriced, but that's neither here nor there), so if you've got an older computer, you might want to consider that.

I have used RagTime Solo for a book that I am putting together (200+ page sof text plus 100+ photos). So far, it handles everything very well, good control of text, and photo position, etc. And it prints well - never any problems with the program itself. My only concern is that it fails to make the PDFs. I wonder if that is a feature of the paid version only?

Ignore the argumentative nature of this poster. He is old and can't engage in meaningful dialog
very long. Therefore, management asks that you at least humor him. Thanks.

I totally agree that Quark is overprices, but the educational discount of $200 is VERY reasonable considering it's where most the jobs are.
That being said, Quark 6.1 runs on a 500 GHz G4 very well... it's Photoshop and Illustrator that bog down the system...
