Hi All,
Need some advice :-)
I'm looking to BTO a PB from the apple store and was wondering how many of you have encountered this problem?

Thanks for the replies
Purchasing a 17" PB locally in TW costs about 300 dollars more, but as you all know, am afraid to receive a beautifully crafted PB with dead pixels. ( that would be a major nightmare! )I wonder why apple won't sell 100% dead pixel free PB.

That's simple to answer. No notebook manufacturer will sell guaranteed 100% dead pixel free machines.
The notebooks would be much more expensive since the manufacturer would have to buy LCDs hat a much higher price if they were guaranteed to be absolutely dead pixel free. But as manufacturing processes evolve this is becoming more and more of a non issue.

I've been lucky. Since 2000, I've owned 3 laptops, a clamshell iBook, a G4 iBook and my PowerBook 17. Haven't had a dead pixels on one of them.

Thats why I'm more inclined to purchase locally at a dealer, but they don't have BTO, so no 128Vram models. This sucks royally...

Yeah no manufacturer will have an absolutely zero dead pixel policy. I think I called apple once and asked what theirs was, I think it was 4 (or maybe 7) and they had to be in the center of the screen.
Although there was one site once I remember ordering from- I bought a Samsung LCD and if you bought Samsung LCD's from this one website they had an absolutely zero dead pixel policy.
Anyways no dead pixels on mine so far as I can tell- although I have a scratch? on mine? I can't figure out what it is exactly it is a tiny white mark, about the size of 1 subpixel and it is in the very exact center of the screen. At first Ithought it was just dust because that is what it is shaped like but I could not wipe it or blow it away. A tissue with a drop of water did not fix it either. It's not a big deal though since I can't even tell that it is there unless the pixels behind it are black and I look closely.

We ordered three 15" 1.5GHz in May and one of them has a stuck pixel about 1/2" above the bottom edge of the screen.
You don't see it on white, but on grey and blue (it's redish).
Massaging didn't help.
Michael.

Yeah, the thing is it's not gonna help you asking people on the forum if they have received dead/stuck pixel free Apple notebooks.
For example, you could have 100 feedbacks from posters telling you that they received the "perfect powerbook" with no dead or stuck pixels, no raised keys, no heat issues and so on. Then you go out and buy one with the expectations of getting the "perfect powerbook" and aside from the other things mentioned you may get a dead or stuck pixel.
It's inevitable on any LCD.
I would recommend to buy your notebook from a retailer with a "no questions asked" exchange policy as opposed to buying it directly from Apple.

I have 1 stick subpixel (blue) about 3mm away from the right edge of my LCD. I never notice it except when my screen is completely black - even then it's hard. It took me several days from purchase to find it. PB was purchased around 7/1/04 and is the newest rev 15"

Yup, I see your point and thats why I'm leaning to just purchase it at the retailer. Thanks all for your replies I appreciate it, but it is a good indication of how well the PBs are QAed.
Cheers.

It's already explained a few times, but a certain number of stuck pixels are acceptable and that's why people get them. If they threw out all non-perfect displays, then the extra cost would have to be paid by you.

if you are that worried, then you should not get a built to order powerbook. get the standard configuration so that you can return it, if it does not meet your standards.

I think it is rather funny that everyone goes on about how it would be too expensive if they could garuantee 100 percent pixels, yet there already is an LCD manufacturer who gaurantees every pixel on the screen. I won't spoil it and I'll let you figure out who it is, but it is obviously possible.

Did a quick search and Sony does offer Zero dead pixels guarentee.

So I know this is not a dream... Of all companies Apple should offer this because Apple is selling us " top of the line " equipment. aren't they?

Good find. The company I was refering to was LG.
And I agree completley with you. When I first came to Mac, it seemed like Apple was the leader in service and technology in just about every aspect of their products, lately it seems they are falling behind: pixel policy, quality of screen resolution, service departments, proc speed, etc...

i actually carry around a pixel checker software in my bag, just incase i do buy a PB. Kinda funny but necessary. I can't seem to justify spending 3000 dollars and getting a panel that has dead pixels. Here's more info on this subject while we're at it.

Got my 15.2" BTO with 128MB VRAM and 5400 RPM disk yesterday evening. No dead or stuck pixels. Great machine.
The import wizard was fantastic. Up and running in 30 minutes after transferring apps and user accounts etc. Real timesaver.

On my revA PB replacement screen, I've now watched one and now two stuck pixels appear. The second is in a more obvious part of the screen (the first in on the right hand side, I can pretty much ignore it).
Do you know how many pixels need to go bad for Apple to service this via Apple Care?

As I mentioned earlier, BTO's generally have a "pixel perfect" success rate. This has been the case for many people that I know personally. While it's still no guarantee, a BTO is custom made per customer and they generally are handled more exclusively since it's coming directly from Apple and it's not part of the bulk of machines sent out for all of the distributors.

According to that website, dead pixels are technically covered by the hardware warranty because it counts as faulty hardware. You could probably gripe about it and get it replaced anyway.

None so far on my new (arrived last Wednesday) Powerbook 15" 1.5 Gig! Damn, I still have that new Mac ownership high! Woohoo! Uh, excuse me.
Acouple words of advice ... APPLE CARE! No worries about defects.
Also to feel less paranoid about mishaps, put ypour Mac under homeowners insurance and travelers insurance when uh travelling!
Enjoy!

I agree 100% with this advice. It pays in the end to go this route if dead pixels truly are a concern.
The first three 12" rev c PB's that I bought and returned all had very noticable red pixels and for me this was unacceptable. The fourth 12" PB I bought (my current machine) also had a dead pixel, but it is light blue? and I don't really notice it much at all. Red pixels or dead black ones are definitely the worst!
It's important to note that massaging a dead pixel doesn't always work and there always remains the risk that it could damage your LCD.
