It must be some kind of code because mine has 9 characters. Number-Z-number, number, number-then 4 more numbers.

As my G5 - which i repartitioned and reinstalled a couple of times - doesn't have a number, but my 2 day old PowerBook has one, I guess the software at the factory that preinstalls the system puts it there.

Mines got a Z in it so its not a phone number. Still on factory install but with all remote updates carried out. Must be a reference number, or many a lottery ticket number to a national lottery in some country, but which one...which one?

Quick question for all of you who have the code, have you ever re-installed the OS on your machines?
I do not have the code but I did an "erase and install" when I got the computer .

It is probably an internal Apple part number referring to the software installed onto the hard drive.

It's the hard drive's serial number. Don't worry about it.

This is just a guess:
I don't have a number but I did a clean install of the system when I got the mac. I didn't use the installer "wizard" (movie, guided install etc). The wizard version copies a disk image to your disk from something already set up by Apple - presumably the disk from that original machine had a code on the disk - maybe to know what version of the disk image it was.
The wizard install is quick, clean is long (20 mins).
Or it could be a secret number
And I'm not part of it

I don't have it on my Rev A Al 15" but I did a clean install when I got Panther. My MDD PowerMac doesn't have it either, but I think I did a clean install on that too some time ago.
