Nifty editorial about how Micosoft is pushing to change USB into a "secure" device protocal. A protocal that will only work with Windows. Linux and OS X users will SOL. Everything will be dual standard again. You'll have really, really cheap "Windows Compatible" USB devices and motherboards, and then you'll have really, really expensive "other" USB devices and motherboards.

Let's just hope all of Microsoft's highest-ranking people suddenly have strokes and die.

I simply hate that they are using fear to move their agenda forward.
The real issue is internet connections, not physical access to people's computers.

There are enough suckers out there to keep this burrowing monster alive, well and kicking. The rest will aim for the stars!

Someone already said it better on Slashdot:
"Cringley writes "There IS a new USB standard in the works and it is at the heart of Microsoft's sudden interest in USB security. Co-developed with Intel, the new USB standard specifically excludes Linux and probably OS X devices as well. I'm told the Intel folks are quite embarrassed about this, but feel powerless to do anything about it."
Links? Can you back this up with any actual facts?
Show me the new published standard that "specifically excludes linux and probably OS/X".
And if he's so sure it specifically excludes Linux, why is he doubtful about OS/X?
I call bullsh it and flamebait on this entire article."
You guys know that Cringley, like Dvorak, is a professional flaimebaiter/troll, right?

Despite the fact that some will dismiss this as FUD, just the fact that Microsoft has the potential to influence the market so dramatically just screams illegal monopoly.
Microsoft has the potential to own a piece of everything - next generation DVD, next generation music CD, next generation USB devices...
And they could easily ignore the Linux/Open Source market, and license rights to companies not viewed as a threat, like Apple and Sun (that tend to run their own hardware and own software and do not pose threat to the Wintel or WinAMD empires). And of course, they'll license just enough to keep them out of court, but hold back enough to make the compatibility/experience marginal at best.
Boy, I can't wait for the day when my external hard drive, CD/DVD player and stereo receiver has a Windows logo on it...
Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Yeah...
I think this "standard" may not last too long, won't be adopted quickly, or other things that kill standards.
If Apple can't get a license for the standard, they'll just make something "just work" and seem cooler/faster. Probably wireless FireWire or the like. People will see that the Mac users don't have to have wires running to the computer and will want it.
Point and case...
FireWire 400 and USB 1.
People saw true plug-and-play on the iMac and it was good.

Ugh. In my most of my design classes people bring in USB2 HD, then ask where they can plug in an AC adapter...
Get f*ckin FireWire, you git.
