I noticed last night after putting a DVD in my Powerbook that the DVD player software did not start up; thinking the settings must have been changed I opened up System Preferences, but the proper box was checked for having the DVD player start automatically when a DVD is inserted....hmmmm. Next I opened up Find and did a search for "dvd player" and got back NOTHING! Where did the software go??? The only thing of note that I have done since the last time I watched a DVD on this machine is download two media players: 1) Windows Media Player for Mac OSX ver. 9.0.0, and 2) RealOne player ver. 9.0, build 9.0.0.297-D. I can't imagine how either of those actions could have caused the deletion of my DVD player software, but those are the only changes I can think of that have been made since the last time I watched a DVD.

I am running OSX ver. 10.2.8 on my Titanium Powerbook 867Mhz with 512 MB of RAM and a 40 gig HD; I bought my machine from the local Apple Store.

Any ideas what happened. Also, how do I re-install the DVD player software? I don't recall any type of OSX CD-ROM coming in the box. Maybe I'm missing something obvious; any help in solving this mystery would be appreciated.

Pacifist will let you install individual parts of the OS X packages from the install CD's.

Are you sure you didn't get any CD's with the computer?
edit: And you successfully watched a DVD in the past? This wasn't your first attempt?

AKcrab: Yes, I have watched many DVDs on my PB since I purchased it in November of `02; all via the DVD player software that comes pre-installed, hence my surprise when it went AWOL!

Also, I just found the original box and it does in fact have a "Software Installl And Restore" disc.

Then pacifist should work. You just need to figure out which disk has the DVD app on it.

btw: This probably should have been in the software forum, not the OS X forum.

I realized right away that I was in the wrong forum and tried to delete my post, but was not able to. Sorry about that.

AKcrab: Pacifist did the trick. It never ceases to amaze me that there is so much in the way of simple to use yet elegant software available to the Mac user. Anyway, I think I'm going to send in the $20 to register Pacifist. I'm sure I'll use it again sometime, and it was worth the $20 just to get my DVD player software back without going through a complete restore. Losing it in the first place was a real head scratcher, though. Thanks

The creator of Pacifist frequents the forums. He'll be pleased to hear his app 1) worked and 2) you may register.

I would have to assume you mistakenly put the DVD app in the trash. Maybe you were selecting multiple files to trash, not realizing that the DVD app was also selected? Who knows. I've never seen an app spontaneously disappear.

Glad your problem is fixed.
