From the specs it looks to be a lot faster card. Also more memory. I would say if, and when, ATI develpos the X800 into a mobile setup then that would be the competition.

ATI already has - it's the Mobility Radeon 9800.

Isn't that the mobile version of the Radeon 9800?
The mobile version of the X800 should be announced shortly, it's codenamed M28 right now.
Both Anandtech and Extremetech have reviews on the Go 6800, versus a preprod model of the M28.

No, it's a cut down version of the X800 renamed 9800. ATI said so themselves. Their new chip must be an updated version to compete with the 6800 Go. This time they will probably call it an X800 Mobility.
Anandtech has both chips competing very closely. The X800 is running at 400Mhz, the 6800 at 300Mhz. At the same clock speed the 6800 should be much faster.

Ah, yes, that sounds familiar, forgot about that Thanks for the correction.

Didn't realize that it was based on the X800 chipset. Interesting.

ATI's just giving their mobile chips names based on the performance ballpark they think they're in with the chipset. The Mobility Radeon 9800 is closer to the desktop 9700/9800 in performance, even though it's X800-based. The Mobility Radeon X800 (which is presumably what they'll call the M28) will be in X800 territory, though likely not X800 Pro level.
Now, all Apple needs is a CPU whose performance can really justify that kind of graphics hardware. A single-core G4 with a 167 MHz (or even 200 MHz) bus just isn't going to cut it. Bring on the faster buses, dual cores, and G5s!
EDIT: Oh, one thing you guys should note is that the 6800 Go supports MacOS X. Whether Apple decides to use it is debatable, but we know that it's an option.

The new Radeon chip runs about as fast as an X700. Pretty good. But it runs very hot. The 6800 Go is also too hot for the PowerBook form factor. The only Windows laptops getting it are two inches thick and weigh seven pounds or more. I think we'll be getting the Mobility 9800 first.
