now the display doesn't work. I can connect the PowerBook to a TV and get a picture.

Is there a key sequence I can use to get my desktop to display on the TV?

Before, I would launch System Preferences --> Display, drag the menu bar from the LCD view to the TV view to get the desktop to display on the TV.

Since my display is not working on my PowerBook, I can't do this and was just wondering if there is a key sequence to move the menu bar to the TV view.

I need to backup my laptop before taking it in for repair and need access to my desktop to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know the F7 key for my Alu PB changes from spanning to mirror mode by just pressing the button alone. If your running on the updated OS it's worth a shot. If that doesn't work, try shutting your PB off and turning it back on while connected to your external, it should boot up with your TV as the default display. I'm not sure on any of these counts seeing as I've never worked on a TiBook, but I know they work on my 12" PB.

A friend of mine dropped a bowl of soup on his 17". The screen went out for a couple days but then came back. Gradually the entire laptop started functioning normally. There is hope.

Try cleaning out your Powerbook. There might a short in the circuitry preventing your display to happen.

So buy a lots of alcohol and q-tips and start opening up your Powerbook. Get brave and start cleaning.

I did that when the sound on my Powerbook was acting funny. I believed it happened from a cola spill on the back of my laptop. After I cleaned it out, it started working again.

A lot of research went into opening up the Powerbook before I started cleaning. So what you have to do.

try closing the lid, attaching a keyboard, and hitting the keys to wake it up. You should be able to get it to wake up on the external as the solo display

I believe that either command-F1 or command-F2 will toggle mirroring on/off and should let you get the menu bar on the TV.
You may need to have an external keyboard and the AC adapter plugged in for this to work.

If all else fails try shining a bright light on the PowerBook. It is possible that the LCD screen still works and that the backlight is the only thing that is not working. By shining a bright light on or behind the PowerBook you may be able to see what is on the PowerBook's screen. (Be careful to not let hot lights TOO close to your PowerBook, you don't want any additional heat damage.)

Chris is right, a friend recently spilled pop on their portable DVD player, same thing happened. The backlight somehow failed (shorted, blown, something...) but the LCD display itself still worked. Took a good angle and some good light, but you could see it all.

if none of that works and your warranty is up, just cell it on eBay for parts...

my guess is you freaked out your backlight. as other people said let it sit for a couple days see if it comes back. or if your warranty is all done, take it appart and see if cleaning it up with some Alcohol.
