I have the 160GB FW400 version. Fast and silent.

I dont know about "silent" but they are pretty good. I work in a recording studio where we use all Lacie drives for EVERYTHING, so we have about 8? and have probably had 12 or so since I've been there (about 1 1/2 years). The only thing I've seen happen is that the firewire ports seem to have tendency to go bad. I've had this happen to about 2 or 3 drives, but this could just be from the wear and tear of constantly removing and moving to different studios many times a day. Id recommend them, mainly because I've never had a problem with my personal Lacie drive.
maybe you've been brainwashed too.

I bought the 160 gig version and the hd was the loudest one I have ever had. It forced me to replace it with a 250 gig one. I put it in my Netfinity server and I could still hear it! This goddam thing was louder than the SCSI boot drive and the fans (to get an idea of how loud this thing is, think of a vacuum cleaner).

I have seen some d2s that were absolutely silent, and some that had severe vibration or whining (including my FW 400 250GB drive).

So their selection of drives seems a little hit-and-miss.

Very nice enclosures though, and rack-mountable, too.

Yup, Lacie uses different manufacturers. But they don't print it on the box. If you wanna be sure, test a drive and then buy it.

i've got two 200Gb versions of the d2, both working like a treat!
the only thing i will say, make sure they have plenty of space around it as they run fairly warm!

I have the 160 GB version and love it. Apparently I got a "good" manufacturer because this thing is pretty quiet - much quieter than my old 60 GB LaCie.

I have 9 lacie drives and they are great. I also have one Iomega drive which I regret buying. It costs more, is more noisy, cheap plastic case, and has the most irritating blue led on the case.

Interesting. My LaCie 250 GB fw400/800 is extremely quiet. I love the thing. But it is a shame that it is so hit and miss.

I just bought one of the 500gig FW400/800/USB2 drives and am pretty happy with it - very fast. But it gets pretty hot. I had the alluminum enclosure on top of a wooden desk and then later moved it to another room to connect to a different Mac - couldn't believe how hot it was. I now put the d2 Lacie DVD RW on the bottom, and then stack the d2 500 gigger on top of it. I'll probably end up with a few more.

Anybody know if there is an easy way to gang a bunch of these drives together? I know they have multiple FW800 ports, but it seems a bit of a pain to have to plug in six or eight different power supplies. It would be cool if they had one power supply that had multiple dongles on the end to power the drives.

Also, interesting piece of trivia - I copied about 30 gigs from a failed drive to the d2/500 yesterday and then moved that data from the d2/500 via FW800 to a loaded G5. It took about 20 minutes - if that. Then I started the copy process from the G5 to a Windows machine via a gigabit network. I cannot believe it is taking so long - it's been about 40 minutes and it is not even halfway through. The drive in the windows machine is a 7200rpm drive as, I would imagine, the drive in the G5 is. The G5 is a SATA drive and the drive in the P4 is a Ultra ATA/100. I can only imagine it is the drive interface in the Windows machine (ATA/100) that is slowing it down. Funny, though, because I typically copy stuff (gigs) between the G5 and this Windows box and don't have the same issue. I wonder why? Any rocket scientists got any ideas why it's taking so long?
