Hi,

I just lashed out on a new dual 2.5 G5.

I'd like to move one of the HD's from my old 2x533 to the new box.

Can I do this? I only had a quick look but I didn't see any power supply/interface for an additional drive in the G5.

How does it work? Do I have to buy some sort of ribbon cable to do the hookup? It was very obvious in the G4...

Thanks

Simon

No can do. The G5 uses SATA HDs, and the G4 uses parallel ATA HDs. Best is to put the HD from the G$ in a external firewire enclosure.

Leonard,

That's disappointing...

So how does a new SATA drive install in the G5?

SATA drives are installed very easily, from what I have read (not done it myself yet). There are instructions all over the place. However, if you really want to keep your older drives around, you may want Sonnet's Tempo Bridge which guarantees full compatibility and easy installation.

Look directly below the existing hard drive in your G5, you'll see black data and power interface cables waiting for a new drive to arrive. Physically installing a new SATA hard drive in a G5 couldn't be easier! ...setting it up in the OS is something I'v not done.

I took out the OEM drive in my G5 today just so I could see how they install/uninstall.

The instructions for installing a SATA drive are in the owner's manual.

Big Mac,

That's a great tip. Thanks for that.

You are welcome, but credit goes to tooki for pointing it out originally when this subject came up weeks ago.

There is a manual with the G5 and you can also get it online here http://manuals.info.apple.com/Apple_...SetupGuide.pdf

There are also instructions for various upgrades here http://www.apple.com/ca/support/powe...f/storage.html

you can use your older ATA drive in your new G5. you need this adapter from Sonnet.

http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempo_bridge.html

I am using one now, and it works like a charm. No decrease in speed.

Heh, I had the FedEx tractor-trailer driver put the pallet on the ground, and then we used big carts with fat tires to move them to the room.

There was nothing odd about them, I was just reinforcing that G5s all come with manuals, which seems to surprise the original poster.

Tooki,

I was actually just joking about the manual. I have been using Macs for so long now I just never, ever, look at any of the manuals.

I did after your post though
