Is there anyway to permanently turn off the sound on IMACS such as all the annoying alert sounds that it makes with two key combinations or the alert sounds that can be found throughout the Microsoft Office Software?

Rather than do the work assigned some students only look for ways and find ways to make annoying noises on the computer in class. All or any suggestions are welcomed.

I need something I can undo through the teacher setup and put back on if the sound is needed.

Go to System Preferences -> Sound -> Output and select Mute down the bottom. You could also elect to have the volume control in the menu bar...
This is assuming OS X, the other instructions given were for previous versions of the OS.
MacBook 2.0 160/2GB/SuperDrive
Lots of older Macs

You can mute the sound but once the computer is restarted all the sounds come back with the keys on the keyboard right in front of them. I will try the ehow suggestions. I hope it works. All those alert sounds are so annoying and distracting during class. Thanks.
