Is it normal for the PowerBook's USB/firewire ports to be wobbly, and have an audible metal-creaking sound when the cables are moved up and down?

I've had a few PowerBooks in my time (though not the latest revision, but 'yes' on the revision before... 17" 1.5 GHz), and no, I did not experience what you are referring to.

However, I currently have a 1.25 GHz 12" iBook, and the ports definitely "creak".

Each of the PowerBook models is different. Perhaps you could let the thread know what model and revision of PowerBook you have????
