Hello everyone,

Forgive me if this is an old question, but I am a complete noob when it comes to Macs. I am looking to get a new 17" powerbook, but I am concerned by the fact that the new OS "Tiger" is coming out in less than a month.

I know that Apple allows recent buyers to upgrade for the cost of shipping, but how long is the cutoff for this? Am I better off just waiting until it is released to get the Powerbook?

Thanks,
Jeff

The question boils down to this: Do you need the equipment now? Would the expense justify it? Is 10.4 worth $129 (probably) to you?

Don't play games with when it will come out. No one on this list has any real knowledge, only guesses. If you really want to play the game, wait until the current prediction (of when we will know): April 1. If any announcement is made, we will probably have a good idea then what the "Mac Up To Date" window is.

There will always be another rumor... another upgrade down the pipe.

Generally speaking, if you buy a Mac AFTER Tiger's release data has been announced, you will probably get a free update. Otherwise you will pay the retail price. When Apple announces Tiger's ship date they will make this clear.

I really don't NEED it now. I just WANT it! I know there have been trackpad issues, as well, so I suppose it would be better just to wait until both of these items are resolved.

And thanks for that little tidbit, Chabig.

Thanks,
Jeff

There are? Now you tell me!! Here I've been using the trackpad almost exclusively for more than a year without realizing there were issues with it! Unless this is something with new hardware I report no issues with my trackpad. Maybe I just don't know how it's supposed to work...

The April 15th shipping date is mere speculation, and frankly too soon to be plausible. However, the theory of an April 1 announcement is plausible. If you can wait a couple of days until that happens, do it.
You are in Soviet Russia. It is dark. Grue is likely to be eaten by YOU!

It only affects the new trackpads which are made by Apple. Your trackpad is still a trackpad from Synaptics and they never had problems.

Apple's policy in the past has been to offer purchasers of any equipment bought AFTER the new OS has been officially announced the opportunity to upgrade for "free" (although there is a - usually - $20 rip-off... er, shipping and handling charge). You will have to send Apple proof of purchase (one of the tickets that came in the box) to be able to claim this "free" upgrade.
