Why am I downloading and beig asked to install iPod updaters? I don't have an iPod, will never have an iPod and would rather not be bothered about software updates for it. How to I stop Software Updater from downloading this cruft?

You can remove software updates you never want to install from the list of available updates by making them inactive.

In Mac OS X 10.3 Panther:

1. Open System Preferences > Software Update
2. Select (click) the first listed update you want to make inactive. Click on the listing text, not the Install check box.
3. On the Apple Menu Bar, select Update > Ignore Update.
4. A sheet will appear asking you to confirm your intent to ignore the update. Select accordingly. The selected update disappears from the list.

Repeat steps 1-4 for other updates you want to make inactive.

In Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar:

1. Open System Preferences > Software Update
2. Select (click on) the first update listing you want to make inactive. Click on the listing text, not the Install check box.
3. On the Apple Menu Bar, select Update > Make Inactive. The undesired update disappears from the list.

Repeat steps 1-3 for other updates you want to make inactive.
Good Luck!

A simpler solution, as noted on Apple's support page...
While it is possible to deactivate individual updates such as those for iPods, a much simpler solution is to buy an iPod.

Actually, the first solution is simpler by my calculations

Time it takes to do as Apple Support says:

6 hours of work to make money to pay for it
10 minutes to navigate apple store website to order it
4 days to wait for it to arrive
4 hours fiddling with it to make it work, put some music on it and play it, back up some files, etc.
2 seconds to throw it in my desk drawer and forget it for a year
30 minutes to take pictures of it and post an eBay ad
7 days waiting for the auction to close
1 hour to pack it and label the box
20 minutes to drive to the post office to send it

Total time for Apple Solution to iPod updates: 11 days, 12 hours and 2 seconds.
Total time for turning off iPod updates from Software Updater: 8 minutes.

You've been given bad advice

Update: It actually took about 20 seconds to turn the update off
