I have the new iMac G5

The quality of the speakers is quite low

Is is possible to connect a surround sound system to it

And if possible through Airport Express

definately not possible to run 5.1 through the airport express, although you can 2 channel out.

It also has S/PDIF out, so you could theoretically pass an AC3 stream (i.e. surround sound) through the Express to your receiver. I say theoretically because Apple so far has not provided any way to do so.

Ok then

So if i was to buy one would i have to do some wiring myself or does it come with everything the way i need

It would be good if the Air Port would support surround sound
...maybe in the future

Do you know any good brands of speakers that arent too high up in the price range

Thanks

It doesn't come with the audio cable. You either need an analog minijack to RCA cable or a digital minijack to Toslink cable.

For speakers, just stay away from the big-name brands. And please don't buy Bose.

get logitech z-680 500 watt surround sound dts/5.1 system from amazon for $199 or less. Best bang for the buck. Just hook it up witha mini jacked toslink optical cable. Thats my setup with my imac G5 right now and its freakin sweet. Don't buy any of the supposed surround sound speakers that are cheaper than that tho cus they likely don't have optical outs as i found out the hard way with another set of logitechs.

Yes, but those are still in the class of "computer speakers." If you want good quality, you'll need to look for actual home theater speakers.

A good reference for all things home theater are the AVS Forums.
