what's the command for repairing permissions from the shell?

i've got a part-time, freelance work-from-home employee who just changed all his permissions on his entire drive because he didn't know what he was doing, and all he can do with the machine is boot into single-user mode. He doesn't have an install disk there, since I installed his system using my multi-seat licesne, and I've got the disks here.

Yes, I ran a search. Sue me.

That won't work, you need to start a few more daemons before diskutil will be functional.

Here's a complete set of commands that should get you going:

fsck

mount -uw /

/usr/libexec/register_mach_bootstrap_servers /etc/mach_init.d

/sbin/SystemStarter start SecurityServer

diskutil repairPermissions /

Thanks-- it got him going. I don't know what he was thinking-- I installed OS 10 for him 2 weeks ago, gave him a 30 minute lesson, (I'd SWEAR I explained users and permissions at that point) and left him with a book to read. This was his big leap from OS 9, and he just doesn't have a grasp on multiple users, yet. He got the bright idea to change all the permissions and groups on his entire boot drive to his username, and naturally, he was fubarred.

Booting got him to the grey Apple screen, then a console, but no GUI login window. At first (when I posted this) we thought he was too f**d up to log in as a user even from the console, but he was typing his short username wrong, so he did manage to log into the CLI as an admin then run diskutil from there.

Thought at first we'd have to archive and install, but the repair seems to have worked. He certainly got a crash course in permissions, and I got a crash course in phone support.

Actually, if people weren't ignorant, they wouldn't need to hire IT people period. So you'd still be out of a job.

You really don't read well, do you? FYI, I bought a single squeegee, a gallon of black ink and 10 frames in 1992, with my own money. I parlayed that into a million-dollar company within four years, and my dad had nothing to do with it. He's a nice guy, but I've been supporting myself since I was 17, and never borrowed a dime from him.

I'm self-taught on my Macs, and I'm not a support person. I'm an end-user, who uses these forums for what they're for, unlike you, who appear to only use it to slam people for some sort of sick ego boost. Good luck with the therapy.

Not true. I basically serve as the IT person at my work, but I wish I didn't, because I have a whole other job description I'm meant to be doing at the same time, so one or the other is always being forced to the backburner. Just because I can do it doesn't meant it's reasonable for me to fix every little computer problem that comes up.

Nah, my point above was that if people were self-sufficient and knew their computers inside and out (as in, not ignorant) they wouldn't need to hire IT people (such as myself) in the first place.

Of course... it's in my best economic interest that the unwashed masses remain ignorant as to the mysterious ways of computronic machinery!

Nothing wrong with querying a community of enthusiasts to get a quick answer... I do it all the time and get paid handsomly to do so. Sometimes if you don't use just the right wording, Google can spit out a bunch of useless links and coming to places like this is just more efficient.
