I was just wondering if any of you guys had found a way around the built-in-firewire requirment. That is the one thing my older PB does NOT have, and at the moment I dont have the money to up-grade my laptop.

If the Tiger install CD won't let you install on your machine, do a search for a program called XPostFacto.

That will let you install OS X on officially unsupported machines.

I have no idea if it works with Tiger yet, though - you may have to give the developers a little while. They're generally good about updates, though, and the program works as advertised.

I doubt that anybody will have anything else to say other than "XPostFacto".

Enjoy your wait, though.

Another option is to install it on (or use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy to) an external drive using a newer computer, then use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy it from the external drive to the older computer.

The only thing to be careful of, is that some of the older machines don't allow booting from a USB drive. In that case you have to partition the internal drive of the old machine first, install OS 10.3 (or 10.2) on one partition, then use CCC to copy from the external drive to the other partition. It just requires a little more planning to think through the size of the partitions and which OS will be on which partition when you're finished.

Well, I'll second the cloning route because, and I quote,
XPostFacto does not work with Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) yet, but I will certainly be trying to make that happen! XPostFacto relies on parts of the source code for Mac OS X, which Apple won't release until after Tiger ships. So I will have a better idea how much work Tiger will require once I see the source code.
So give it a shot, and let up know how it works.

Well as pointed out to me by people with more smarts than myself ( thanks dad ), that USB will be very slow. I plan on going with a firewire case instead, because I do have a FireWire card that I can use. I will be picking up the case this weekend, and we should have recived Tiger by then and I will be sure to let every one know how I made out. Also if worst come to worst I will need to upgrade the 20 gig hd I have in my PB now.
