gaaah Gmail and Mail.app problems

I've tried numerous times to link my Gmail account with my mail program on my powerbook but cant get it to work.
It does the "incoming mail" screen fine but when i do the outgoing mail screen it just trys to connect to the stmp server forever and then quits!
I have followed all the directions on the Gmail walkthrough but to no avail.
I am using mail that came with tiger and the gmail instructions are for the older mail version. If anyone can help me out (tell me exactly what to type in each box) or any setting that needs to be changed it would help so much.

in the outgoig mail page i am entering:
outgoing mail server : stmp.gmail.com
then checking the "use authentication" box
Username : [email protected]
Password: (my password)
i have even enabled the pop settings through gmail
im going crazy no one else seems to have this problem

ok after messing around a bit i can now send e-mail from mail.app, that works fine but it wont let me recieve mail i get or already had on gmail.
under the preferences plane under account information for incoming mail i have:
incoming mail server: pop.gmail.com
username: [email protected]
Password: (my password)
when i hit the "get mail" button it looks for awhile then just stops with no error message or found emails??

ive been there and followed every step to a t, my stuff looks EXACTLY like it does on the gmail page.
