Buy one, if it turns positive go see a doctor for confirmation.

These tests are designed to rather give false positives than false negatives.

There are a number of home tests, and most are based on the same chemistry. They all test for HCG (human corionic gonadatropin), a hormone that is produced almost from the moment of implantation. Clearblue Easy is touted because it is so easy to read the results.

For comparison, about 19 years ago, my wife and I used a test that featured a test tube with reagent in it that you placed a measured amount of the woman's urine in and set in a special stand. An angled mirror at the bottom of the stand allowed you to determine if a dark ring had formed in the bottom of the test tube, signifying a positive result. This test took quite a while to work and produce a result.

Tests like Clearblue Easy offer a very quick indication that does not require special viewing techniques-one current test shows a positive or negative sign, depending on the result. They are ALL approximately of the same accuracy (~99%), regardless of what others have said in this thread. It IS important to ensure, as Cody says, that the test kit comes with two tests; it is possible to test too early and have a negative indication simply because there is not yet enough HCG in the woman's bloodstream for it to be excreted in the urine.

Finally the VERY FIRST THING to do after a positive result is to get the woman scheduled for the begining of prenatal medical care. Most healthy women only need a little dietary counseling and some prenatal vitamins, but the only way to be sure the mother and baby will do their best is to get the mother into prenatal care RIGHT AWAY. Yes, it is that important.

Most of the members here have never even seen a naked woman, nevermind had the opportunity to impregnate one.

You'd have just as much luck asking this on Slashdot.

Yeah, when she poops out a baby, she'll know she was preggers. Don't forget where you got all this good advice, either -- I'm sure we can all help rear the little pup!

the CVS version of clearblue is just as good at a cheaper price, and as cody said, buy the box that comes with two. You will never believe the first one anyhow.

If she's been at this for a while, I hope she's been to http://www.babywishes.homestead.com/PregnancyTests.html,
which has PG tests and such in bulk for much, much cheaper.

Oh well what do you know! She is not preggers.. She seems pretty depressed about the negative result.
Any witchcraft ideas that will get her to conceive? I will tell her to try that out.

I hate downloading stuff through CVS. I'll wait till someone bundles an executable and posts a download link.

Help with getting pregnant?

Well, taking folic acid is very important - vitamins every day. Eat red meat. Eat a lot of olive oil.

Secondly, does she diet much or exercise too much? Both of those things put a stress on the body. Tell her to start eating whatever the heck she wants and cut down on exercising. Seriously, it does help. How long has she been trying to get pregnant?

The other thing is getting enough sleep.

The most important thing is not to TRY to get pregnant.

Simply don't try to prevent it.

That way there is no expectation of it, less disappointment, less self-esteem - all of those negative emotions do not help with the situation.

Anyway, I should know. I've done it a few times and if I found out I was pregnant again I'd be thrilled. I love babies and children, though if it happens again we'll be getting some part-time help. I need my exercise time to stay in shape afterwards!

I am pretty sure that it is the other way around. Tests can only really give false negatives.

On another note, pregnancy tests here in the UK are extremely expensive compared to elsewhere. My wife and I were in Australia in February and we got a double test for half the price of a single test here in the UK. We nearly thought of filling the suitcase up and selling them back here!

Is there really any difference in home testing kits?

Having tried to read a few myself, there is. I'm not sure there is a difference in accuracy (they all seem to be around 99.9% accurate) but there is a difference in readability. This is not the kind of thing you want to be looking at whilst scratching you head thinking "Is that line a quarter shade darker than the other?"

OMG! You're PREGNANT? Congrats! Who's the lucky sheila?

(mommy board abbreviations: PG=pregant, BFN/BFP=big fat negative/positive... )

topic: there's readability, and sensitivity. Some tests say they can tell as soon as 4 days late, etc. And some tests are easier to use than others.

but really, if your friend has been trying for longer than a year, and she's tried the tips on fertility friend (timing during the month, temperature, etc) then it's time to see her doctor.

Anyway, kids cost about $200,000 to raise and put through college. Each one. They take all of your time, all of your money, and you'll never get a decent night's sleep again once you have one. Forget late night dinners, weekend getaways, any privacy, and keeping your cars clean. Expect them to stain your favorite clothes, wipe their noses on you, and ruin your electronics from time to time. Also, don't forget that you will be committed to changing diapers each and every day and of course, they love to cry when you're about to sleep.

But, are they worth it?

Yeah, they really are. As long as you're ready for it.
