"You guys see this? You guys hear about this?"
"You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do," Cruise said.
The interview became more heated when Lauer, who said he knew people who had been helped by the attention-deficit disorder drug Ritalin, asked Cruise about the effects of the drug.
"Matt, Matt, you don't even -- you're glib," Cruise responded. "You don't even know what Ritalin is. If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, OK. That's what I've done."

I'm really curious if anyone captured it. I heard it was extremely funny.

Yeah, Cruise is an idiot, and Scientology is VERY anti-psychiatry. Judging by all the pamphlets I used to get in my mailbox (since I lived right beside one of their churches for a few years), they prey on psychiatric patients.
I really do wonder if Cruise's antics are gonna have a negative impact on his new movie. All I can say I have no more desire to see War of the Worlds now, cuz Cruise is getting more and more annoying.
P.S. I like the .gifs.

You don't have to believe in a cooky religion to have some doubts of some psychiatric medicines.

Agreed, a level of healthy skepticism can be quite reasonable. That doesn't mean Cruise isn't a flake though.

It was more of a constructive argument rather than fighting. Tom Cruise seemed pretty passionate about his opinion on the issue and put forth the effort to bring it across.
Leave it to jamil5454 to summarize the topic of MacNN Lounge threads in 2 sentences

He basically called Matt Lauer an idiot for saying that certain medications have helped his acquaintances. As restrained as he might have been, that's the bottom line.
Like I said, healthy skepticism is good, but I wouldn't call Cruise's assertions healthy skepticism.

No, but don't forget that Scientology would give people sleep-depriving drugs while telling them they will "help them sleep."

Scientology is against psychiatry because psychiatry will tell it's patients they are involved with a cult, and are in danger.
They know this. Hubbard was pretty good at trying to keep the truth away from his victims.
And Cruise called Ritalin a street drug in one sentence, and then told Matt he didn't know what he was talking about in the next.
Ritalin isn't a street drug. Tom obviously either doesn't know what that term means, or he does, and is purposely being deceptive.

Oh so true on all of these statements. For those of you who aren't familiar with the practice of Scientology, it consists of an ancient race of aliens, one in particular, who, seeing his people dying of overpopulation on their planet, decided to take billions of his people to the newly formed earth. He placed them in a volcano, and blew them all up with a hydrogen bomb, solving the overpopulation problem on his planet. Apparantly, the spirits of all these murdered aliens haunt us, and to get rid of them, what do we do? Pray? No, of course not silly, we pay Scientologists (or whatever) massive amounts of money. Hubbard, the creator was actually quoted as saying the real way to get rich was in religion, crazy huh. As one pays more money he/she "gets rid of" the alien spirits. Tom Cruise is purposefully being deceptive, not just about the topic on drugs, but about the religion itself. On all Scientology websites they want you to buy a book before they explain the religion to you. This is a pretty creative story, even better than another story cooked up by Hubbard, "Battlefield Earth"

The fact that he kneeled before several studio execs...and it would appear L Ron Hubbard also.

Yes, and he does the "Scientology" thing there too with the holding the guys hand, looking into his eyes and chastised him with "Now why did you do that" over and over again.
I feel sorry for his kids.
Nicole needs to get a restraining order out on him.
But of course they church would have her dead before that would happen.

While I agree that there are abuses of drugs and over prescribed at times, to think that all drugs are bad is simply foolish. I found it interesting that he wouldn't even consider the information Matt was offering. Frightening to say the least.

Also, the part where he says "...your glib" is where the whole conversation starts to break down. Tom would ask questions, but avoid answers...
Tom also acts like he is authority in the field. No offense, but he has a high school education. I'm not saying he may not have some insight into the field, but there are people that build careers around this subject... have decades of experience. People that would be more than happy to move away from issuing drugs to solve problems.

Yes, also when Matt would bring up a valid point, or was about to, Tom would talk louder and over him to muffle him out.
Tom's spinning and strawman tactics and personal attacks remind me of some forum members.

Who wants to bet that Matt Lauer will, going forward, be labelled a "suppressive person," or SP???

The sad thing is, I want to go see the movie, but now, I'll probably end up waiting until it is out on video. It's no secret that "controversy" fuels ticket sales.

Truth be told, if such a thing ever happened, Tom would be shacked up in some underground scientology hideout hoping not to be caught.
Either that, or he would try to charge the world money, in stages, to get rid of said aliens.

Tom had a wonderful opportunity to support alternative methods to drug therapy... but he blew it. He came across as an egotistical, immature, celebrity zealot. He didn't want to listen to any alternatives and even insulted a well respected interviewer. (Here is a clue Tom, he was interviewing you... he wasn't being "glib")
I think if he had come out and "slightly" attacked drug therapy, and then backed off... stated his cause (while listening to the interviewer), he would have been well received. Instead, he made himself and his "religion" look simply crazy.
When Matt said "I've had personal acquaintances who have been helped by drugs", Tom could have come back with "Have they really been helped, or has the problem simply been masked by the drugs." etc. and he may have had a point.

I think it's funny the way he chastised him. He basically held his hand and told him calmly and politely that he was a jerk. He should have been like Burt Reynolds and just slapped the guy on the face.

The big question, here, is:
When did Matt Lauer start growing hair again?
