iMAC 350 Blueberry 56k modem

My modem has died a horrible death. It struggles to even dial-in (max=22k)and won't hang up until I unplug it. My iMAC was off during the storm so I suspect a hardware failure. Instead of sending it in for repair and waiting who-knows-how-long for it's return, I wonder if it's just easier to buy a new modem board and replace it myself. Is the modem board removable from the iMAC and does this sound like a cost effective way to fix it? I'm concerned that the "modem board" my be populated with other expensive pieces of non-modem hardware which will drive up the cost.

Any advice is appreciated.

Ouch. A withering blast of sarcasm. I'm hurt.

iMac: Removing the Modem

I would not attempt this myself; I would take aperfectnoone's advice and take it into the shop. I have no idea how much the part would cost, or even if it's obtainable from Apple if you're not an authorized service provider.

Thanks CaseCom. Good info...sarcasim well spent.

I found a replacement modem at www.allmac.com for $100. I've seen them as high as $150 but I'm not done shopping yet. I agree it looks pretty scarey but I have no reservations about diving in. It's the getting out that scares me

get in there and do it yourself!! Computers are complicated to engineer, but they're just like any other assembled product to repair. Uh, do be delicate, though.

Also, if you think your iMac is cool now, just wait until you see how thoroughly awesome the design is all the way inside! Awesome engineering and design needs to be disected to be appreciated.

I'm in the same boat as you. Blueberry iMac, dead modem. My solution is to buy an external USB modem.

I work in ISP support and after every thunderstorm in our neck of the woods we get lots of calls from people with fried modems. Most people think they are safe if the machine is turned off and some even unplg the power but don't realise that the phone line carries a current too.

My advice is to invest in a good phone line surge protector or you'll just get nuked again in the next storm. Unplug the phone line from the modem when not in use will work too but not as safe.

BTW - USB external modems work well on iMac's.
- 24" iMac 2.4Ghz 4GB 500GB
- PMG4 450Mhz 384Mb OSXserver.
- iPhone 3GS

OK...an active modem thread. Here's my big chance to get *an* answer to a question I've posted three times in the past four months.
What's with the v92 modem standards. Supposedly gives 50+kbs uploads instead of usual 33+kbs on a 56.6 modem. I want to do this b/c we do some teleconferencing with iVisit and I want to maximize throughput.
So...how can I get v92 from my '99 slot loader. Is this hardware or software?
Thanks in advance.

BigBear,

First your ISP has to be v92 compatible. Ask them first. Then to get your modem v92 compatible you need to buy some modem scripts from http://www.macntosh.com/macara50.html I used to use this before I got DSL and there was a big difference on only a v90 56k ISP. Also make sure you aren't using cheap phone lines from your modem to your phone jack. I use the big thick gold wires from Belkin which improves it a bit (I was pretty sceptical before using them). Hope this is of help. God Bless.
