The "compatible" G5 systems look like recent but older G5 revisions, any reason to suspect they wouldn't work in the most recent 2.3 revision

I don't think so. If compatible with first gen G5's, it should be compatible with the latest rev, which still ask PC3200 DDR 400.

I was thinking along the same lines but I have sent an email to Geil just to get word from the "horses mouth"...

I was hoping they'd have a a 2GB module. Getting a pair would get you to 4 GB very nicely.
Oh well. Someday I'll be able to afford 16 GB in my G5.

OK, here is the exchange I had with Geil support and it looks good.... not the most detailed of responses from Geil but good nonetheless....

Hi,

Yes it should work fine on the newer revisions.

Subject: Are your Apple Series DDR400 compatible with the newer G5 revisions

Hey folks, just writing to see if the Apple Series DDR 400 modules
are good for the latest revision of the G5's, specifically the Dual
2.3Ghz, model M9748LL/A. The product page http://www.geilusa.com/
proddetail.asp?linenumber=45 shows what looks like some past
revisions of the Dual 1.8 G5.

Thanks in advance,

Robert

Well, short, but you could use it against them in case it doesn't work... good luck!

I'll just chime in with my 2ยข here. I just purchased a pair of Geil sticks since they were mentioned in this thread. Popped them in my June 2004 Dual 2.0, no dice. Says 512MB on boot, which is just the stock memory, says that the slots the Geil sticks are in are empty. Also tried booting only with the Geil mem, power light just blinks. Not sure if they're just bad sticks or what, but at least the pair I got won't work in my machine.

I have two 1GB sticks in my Dual 1.8 and haven't had a bit of trouble running 24X7 during the last three months.

I know it's not a 2.3 but it IS feedback.

Luck.

I actually wound up going with some 1GB Corsair Valueselect modules as there seems to be much more experience and positive feedback about them. I still don't have either the sticks or G5 (is is STILL sent to manufacturing for a week now) but I will report back ASAP when everything arrives.

jsnyder I hope yu get your issue worked out, I would email the Geil guy that I received word back from above and try to find out the issue.

I received my Geil 2 x 512 sticks from NewEgg yesterday (GA1GB3200WDC). Installed in my dual 2.0 PowerMac (old style, 4 slot, non PCI-X). No dice. Won't see the ram at all. Swapped out the OEM stuff, tried booting with ONLY the Geil stuff. No dice. Won't boot, or do anything.

Sent a couple of e-mails to GeilUSA. Here's the two replies:
"Hi Brandon,

It could be problems reading the SPD on the newer Mac's. Unfortunately the
bios is locked so you cant make any changes to it. I think the best
solution would be to return to Newegg.

and

"Hi Brandon,

It is highly unlikely that both module will be bad. So I'm thinking it
could be a compatibility issue with newer revisions reading the SPD.

I'll be the first to admit I'm not tech-savvy enough to know what this means...aside from the memory won't work in my Mac. I've printed an RMA # for NewEgg, but at this point I'm thinking I might just pick up the Corsair stuff instead. Can anyone provide a part # / model number for a KNOWN GOOD 512 Corsair stick? I'll need 2 of 'em...

Thanks,

Brandon

Follow-up:

I just got off the phone with Mr. Wong at Geil USA. He suggested that the Geil ram may not work in my system, in spite of the Geil "Apple Compatibility" guarantee. Mr. Wong, a Geil employee, suggested I return the Ram and get another brand.

Thanks,

Brandon

Just to follow up on my earlier comment, I ended up going for some Techworks ram from OWC, which is working beautifully for me.

Per Geil's engineer, I shipped the Geil ram back to Newegg today for a refund. Also, the replacement Corsair sticks (2 x 512 ValueSelect) arrived today, installed quickly, and seem to be working perfectly. Sounds like I have to recommend Corsair over Geil. My Corsair sticks were something like $90 shipped from Newegg, vs $110 for the Geil.

Thanks,

Brandon
