Eight charged over Star Wars leak
Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
Revenge of the Sith opened to huge fanfare in May
Eight people have been charged by US authorities with the illegal online release of the final Star Wars film before it appeared in cinemas.

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith was leaked onto the internet the day before the film's worldwide release in May.

Documents from the court in Los Angeles allege the copy was taken from a post-production facility in California, where one of the defendants worked.

The defendants are charged with various offences relating to the leak.

Guilty plea

The US attorney in Los Angeles filed a copyright infringement charge against Albert Valente, 28, of Lakewood, California, for taking the Star Wars copy from the post-production house where he worked.

In a statement, the US attorney's office said he had pleaded guilty to the charge.

Six other people were charged with copyright infringement and other charges for copying and distributing the Star Wars film that Valente took.

Another defendant, Marc Hoaglin, 36, of Huntington Beach, California, was charged with putting the film on the internet.

Mr Hoaglin could face up to three years in jail if convicted.

All eight defendants are scheduled to appear in court next month.
Pirating is a big deal, but I don't think I ever expected to see this kinda thing.

Are you kidding? Most pirated movies I've ever seen have that scrollie on the bottom saying that it's a screening copy and it shouldn't be distributed at all.

Although I am generally against heavy-handed content enforcement by content producers, this time they are 100% in the right. The guy who took it in the first place was being paid to keep the film secret, and the people who distributed it after him must have known that the film was not released yet. That's a much different situation than your garden-variety P2P user. While I don't think this led to any loss in sales (in fact, it may have increased sales when people realized that the film didn't suck as much as the last two), content producers need to clean up their own house before suing everyone and their brother over illegal distribution....

edit: cue the Ha! Ha! Sith guy....

Glad I bought my Copy of Episode III while on Vacation in Vietnam. It's a bit of a hacked copy but for
just $1.00 it was worth it.

Just a bit of a hacked copy, huh?

Anyway, that movie was terrible. I felt embarrased just watching it.
Making sense is overrated.

Exactly. It's just a friggin' movie, nothing to blow a great job on. (LOL)

Too bad penalties for copyright violations can't be set by the actual quality of the item being pirated. If that was true, those that pirated this movie or those that pirate the latest Britney album would receive nothing more than a stern look.

And over a George Lucas movie at that!

Now to make the BBC article funny, replace Episode III with Howard The Duck.

I think the more appropriate title to replace that with is:

Either "Ishtar" or "Gigli" pronounced giggly.
