All wrong. There are no good cities.
Although, if there were, Monte Carlo would top that list easily.

What is the Economic Intelligence Unit??

For me the best cities remain Paris and London; it is safe, there are so much to see and learn, the people are charming, the air is ok, the schools are top rank.

If I had the papers I would live there in a flash; just for the culture, the museums, the theatre, the historical sites.

What kind of museum Calgary has, just one and really called the Glenbow museum and nothing in it if you compare it to the Louvre or the National Gallery, or musee d'Orsay or the British Museum...

Do not give me the blabla about the other cities in Europe being bigger.

If Calgary is in the top rank should the real culture, of museums, classical music, theatre should be superior to anywhere else in the world but it is not.

Again for cultural intellectual reasons the best cities are in Europe.

Little important detail, the underground WoW.

Is my sarcasm detector broken, or do you really think that London is a safe city? And I'm not even talking about bombing here, London is certainly not a safe city. And charming people? Cocknies are pretty much universally hated across England. And really, how could you live anywhere that charges £3 or more a pint?

Eh, depends. If you want to live in socialism that is. And love the cold.
If not, it's a pretty sucky place to live.

BTW, this is all on the "economy" of the place. Nothing much else is considered. "How much money one can make"

Crap.

Cockneys are not hated, evidence? it does not cost more than 3 quid a pint, it only cost more than 3 quid if you buy "blond" beer from all bar one.

London, Paris and Hong Kong are the best cities in the world, NY is cool too.

I love my little town. I'd never live in a city with more than 5,000 residents.

Actually, I have my eye on this little village with about 20 people living in it. Might have to build a house there.

There are rather a lot of Swiss cities on that list too - so maybe they confused 'best' with 'dullest' ?

Vancouver? 1st of all, the residential high rises there look like ass and the cables running over all of the street make it look like it never developed properly. On top of that, when I've been there homeless people are everywhere. And I mean everywhere. As a former graffiti artist I liked that fact that there was a lot of graffiti, but there was so much of it that it's worrisome.

I found London safe because there are police everywhere. It is unfortunate about those bombings but it is not the rule there.

I am mainly talking about the cultural life.

In Canada I lived in 4 cities for extended period of times and I traveled a lot.

Another city I loved was San Francisco because it reminds me of Europe and the people are fantastic there like in most places in the United States.

Umm... Yes it is.

You found London safe because you were infatuated with the "culture" and thus blinded to its darker qualities. Simple as that.

But don't take my word for it. Go experiment. Walk around London at midnight with a $5,000 necklace on. See what happens. Then go do the same in Monte Carlo with a $500,000 necklace. I guarantee you'll only get mugged in one of those places.

Hmmm, no, I think London is as safe as any large city. I think London is a great city to live in, it has everything... history, culture, diversity, and for a large city it has a massive amount of open and green space... much more than Central Park in NYC. There are places to go and hang out where drinks are cheap, you just have to know where... there are even places in SoHo where you can get a pint for £2. And remember: you don't have to tip! A Sunday afternoon stroll through Hyde Park, or down the Mall to Buckingham Palace... larvely. Or, if you want a bit of culture, how about a visit to one of the many large galleries, such as the Tate and Tate Modern, or the National Portrait Gallery... all of which are free to visit.

London has been through a rough patch over the past three months, it has been victim to the kind of attack any large city could fall prey to (think NY, Madrid...), however, the people there have managed to take it on the cheek, and are carrying on with life as normal.

Given the chance, though, I would live in Manhattan. Any day.

But remember, different strokes for different folks. Not everyone looks for the same thing in a place to live. All cities (and towns) have their pro's and con's... depends what you value most really.
F is for Fooyork.

I am actually infatuated with European cultures and I can't wait to see Germany. I would not walk in any city in the world with a $5,000 necklace but just loved the culture and the people. Wonderful way to live in if you like cultural events like Shaspeare (the English way), Moliere (the French way)etc.

Or just the fact that you get out of your home and see those amazing buildings that have been there for over 2,000 years like the Arenes de Lutece in Paris the old Roman towers near the museum of London, les Invalides, the Tower of London, etc. I passed the age of getting drunk and one pint once or twice a week is more than enough for me. I am 46 not 18.

Saginaw is 100X worse than Flint. Actually, with their new psychotic mayor the place has cleaned up quite a bit. And with the city council and the mayor's office suing each other over everything they are both afraid to do anything which keeps them from really harming the city even more.

Last time I was in Detroit I had my window smashed and my cup of change in my center console and my organizer of CD-Rs stolen. He ignored the Powerbook under the seat (he looked at it, it was disturbed) and the PowerMac in the back. Never had a single crime committed against me in Flint. And I used to work there for 5 years.

Railroader:so tough he vacations in Flint, MI.

Oh well I spent several years in Detroit (the city mind you, not the 'burbs), and never really felt that much threatened. Heard of bad stories though as well as semiautomatic rifle shots..... Also heard of stories from people who grew up in Flint and that was not pretty. I actually just drove through twice : never dared to stop there. :-)

I had the following Tee back in the days

Detroit : (from fr. détroit) Industrial city in the Northeastern US where the weak are killed and eaten. (or something like that).

The homeless for the most part are concentrated on Hastings and Abbot, known as skidrow. And a majority of them have drug problems and most of them refuse help. You can hold a gun to a person to force them into a shelter. Besides the amount of money they make of stupid tourists in asking for change is incredible, and all goes for drugs. But what’s a 5 by 2 block problem area compared to entire neighborhood in other cities.

Detroit's not bad bc there's nobody there. Very little downtown area to get robbed in...

On the other hand, Flint just plain sucks.

Your lying or she's feeding you bullsh!t and you believe it. Shows your ignorance. She was probably trying to avoid an argument with you.

For instance, some tropical plants and palms actually survive there.

Freezing your ass off in Vancouver HA thats Rich!, Vancouver has the same average tempatures as San Fransico. We are lucky to get a couple inchs of snow in the Winter. For the most part in the dead of winter its above freezing, and by a decent amount too.

No, it's about 10F colder in Vancouver than in San Francisco in the Winter.

I think it's quite difficult to quantify culture. I agree, compared to other cities Calgary is rather lacking in culture. Obviously we have scored high on a lot of other aspects and it doesn't hurt that the price of oil is a very good thing for our province.

Of the cities I have been to, my favorite is Seoul, but I don't think I could see myself being happy there in the long term. I like it for it's culture, history and nigh life, but once that wears off, the pollution, density and traffic would probably start to get to me. That's when a city like Calgary would be better to actually "live" in. I feel this same line of reasoning can be applied to a lot of other culturally rich cities that didn't fair so well.

London's pretty safe. I am out with friends most weekends into the early hours, and have never experienced violence (or indeed trouble of any kind).

Most interesting is that of all the places I've lived in the UK, London is the place where you are least likely to get involved in casual violence in pubs and bars. This is a huge problem in the UK, there are some towns where if you go out in a group of men on a Saturday night you can almost guarantee that someone is going to try and start some trouble at some point. This never seems to happen in London.

On the other hand, if you are going to get shot for your £5000 gold necklace somewhere in the UK, it will probably be London (or Nottingham). Simply because there really aren't any illegal guns anywhere else! But as Sherwin said, if you're going to wander around dripping with revolting ostentatious bangles, you'd probably be happier in Monte Carlo anyway (with all the other slimy tossers)
