I heard that having a ROM for pokemon is illegal if you don't delete it in 24 hours! I KNOW I CAN BEAT IT FAST BUT SOMETIMES I TAKE A LITTLE MORE THAN 24 HOURS!

DO YOU THINK THE SITES WILL MIND IF I TAKE 25 HOURS INSTEAD?

ROMs are sort of a legal gray area.

There is no time limit involved though... they are either legal or illegal...

Legally, you are only allowed to have the ROM if you own the game.

Either way, the site hosting the ROMs wont care one bit about whether or not you have the legal rights to the ROM. The people who would care are the developers/publishers of the game, and I highly doubt they'll know you have a copy of their ROM.

It's only illegal if you get caught. When you hear a knock at the door - don't answer. And tell your mom not to answer as well.

mm.... does a company care if you play a game that came out 20 years ago, which they will never release again, and which you can`t buy even if you wanted to.

Okay, Correction time:

ROMs are not legal. Period. End of story.

The data contained on Game Cartridges and/or game discs is not offered under the same type of basic licensing agreement that most commercial software comes under. That is not the case with Roms

2ndly, A person has no right to maintain that data for any period of time. 24 hours or less or more. ROMs are illegal copies of copyrighted materials. Until that copyright runs out (which ain't gonna happen) you don't have right to do it.

ROMs are not a legal grey area.

I invite everyone to take a trip over to Nintendo's page addressing this issue:

If it were that black and white, then howcome all these ROMs sites aren't just shut down?

It's obviously not as simple as you try to make it sound.

The ones that aren't shut down probably stay up because the copyright holders either don't exist anymore or don't exist in a form that would generally care about ROM sites. I remember a little while back Nintendo forced a bunch of the major sites to remove all of its old games because it planned to release them for GBA.

That's nice, but let's continue this discussion on their site then.
