If you're on a local network, isn't there a program that lets you scan all the text being sent out on the local network? What is the app called? It could be useful in a home environment.

you can use ethereal.... but keep in mind most "Cabel/DSL routers" have switched ports these days... so you may not see anything besides your own traffic (and who ever your communicating with).

If you have an ethernet switch rather than a hub, putting your interface in promiscuous mode won't necessarily pick up all network traffic. On a switched network, ethereal and such are most effective when the computer whose traffic you want to examine is also the one on which you're running ethereal. Kind of defeats the purpose.
