Hey everyone -

I'm trying to rip a DVD of my band performing live to use in our newest reel. I've used mac the ripper to pull the whole disc onto my HDD, but it's not in a format I can use.

I guess I'm trying to convert .DAT or .VOB (whichever is the video) into some kind of format I can open in iMovie.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I'll second for mpegstreamclip.

If you don't have or want to buy the quicktime mpeg2 component to make mpegstreamclip work, then I'd recommend using YADE (Yet Another DVD Extractor) to extract VOBs of the dvd, and then FFMPEGX in order to render that VOB into a DV file. Both are free.

I'll third it for the MPEGstreamclip solution

FFMpegX is shareware and worth paying for if you are using it a lot.

I've you've got Toast6+ you can extract .dv files with that

oops, that's right. FFMPEGX is shareware, not freeware.

You might want to try Handbrake. It's free and works well.

I tried Handbrake to create an Ipod Video movie and was very impressed with how easy it can rip a DVD. You can do it all in one step, very sweet.
