A post yesterday advised a buyer of a new ibook to wait on the purchase of applecare until the original warranty neared its expiration. Besides the upfront cost of the plan, what benefit is there in waiting?

One benefit is that you can negotiate a lower price. I received a phone call from Apple right before the warranty expired. When I balked at paying the list price, it was reduced by the phone guy.
