Got a new 60GB iPod Video last Thursday. Hard drive crapped out this morning. Apple store promptly replaced it, tech guys back at Infinity Loop want it back for "review". New iPod is rocking... hope this isn't a repeat of the Nano scandal.

Crap-out Details
1. iPod froze.
2. Reset, couldn't get past Apple screen.
3. PowerBook Disk Utility saw it but couldn't mount it or format it.
4. iPod Updater couldn't mount it.
5. Genius diagnosed hard drive failure 10.24.2005@7:00PM.
6. New iPod loaded and running 10.24.2005@8:00PM.

Possible suspects:
a) Belkin power supply for car lighter.
b) Keeping it in my pocket for show and tell (could it be that sensitive?).

I guess I'm going back with my white 60GB 5G iPod tonight. I can't get it to sleep after multiple hard resets and multiple software restores. The drive has not died, but something is not right.

Yeah... it's warm and gooey, it was in my pocket all day. [BONUS: Name that movie.]

No scratches... leather(ette) sleeve keeps it snug.

You only really hear about the bad ones on these forums

My Video iPod is perfect. All 3 iPods I have owned are still running today with never a problem. (including a first generation one). Every product ever made has some bad ones that slip through the cracks.

Well... I wouldn't be so pesimistic. While the drive did fail, the Apple store swapped it out right away and the replacement has been awesome. Sleek, light, extremely intuitive... and a showstopper at every water cooler and in every geek circle.

I have kept it out of my pocket and I haven't used the powere adapter yet. I'll keep you posted.

There used to be only a couple of hundred thousand out there.
If, say, 0.1% of those are defective, that's a couple of hundred units.

Apple has sold 25 MILLION iPods.
If, say, 0.1% of those are defective, that's 25 THOUSAND unhappy units.

I also bought my 60gb white last Thursday. It's a week old today. With no problems. I use a the monster charger fm transmitter in the car. I fired a 40gb iPod Hard drive one time with an external hub... Apple took care of that for me....

"Exact" as in using a Belkin power adapter? I haven't used it again on my new one... scared it will fry the iPod.

Someone asked what happened to iPod - as if there was an inordinate amount of failure. Just a reminder they're selling upwards of 2.5 million per month. If there was any cause for concern these forums would be filled with irate customers. Instead, you have honest reports from a few and a small % of failure out of box or infant mortality (as it is called). This is acceptable and nothing to be alarmed about.

Best,
Jim

well, seeing as I just got layed off I cannot comment on the iPod Videos, as for past ipods, we generally sent out 3rd and 4th gen ipods in the region of 50-100 a week for repair and this is for the last 6-8 months. As for nano's we didn't repair those at Best Buy, we replaced them, but from the numbers we were seeing, they were coming back about 1 in 3 sold so that didn't look to good either. I've seen almost no 1st and 2nd gens though and I have personally never had a problem with my second gen but my 4th has died 3 times now, HD failure, and once the screen in the first year, not too good with the newer ipods.

We haven't seen many nanos AT ALL in for repair, and that despite the fact that there's only 5 out of 50 iPod dealers in my city that will even deal with iPod warranty repairs/replacements.

go ahead and put it in your pocket. it's supposed to be portable, not something you frame and put on your wall. i have the G5 30 G and have like 20 dvds compressed on to it and sure it may have some scratches, but i use it everyday and its the sweetest thing ever!

I just got a new 60 gigger, haven't used it yet (waiting for my new comp, old one only has usb 1 ) I am worried about this new 'pod... I have had a 15G 3rd gen ipod for the last 3 some years, and it has worked *flawlessly* despite having been dropped and pounded repeatedly over that timespan. (It is in poor cosmetic shape..). I bough my girlfriend a 4th gen over a year ago, and she has had it replaced twice since then due to faulty hard drives. Her third one just crapped out last week, and now the 1year warranty is up. (she'll probably be getting my old one!). I know at least half a dozen other people who have had problems with 4th gen ipods. Now that i think of it, I know more people who have had problems than those who haven't. I sure hope they have fixed whatever issues plagued the 4th gen ipods. If my new ipod craps out, I will have a much different opinion of the popular music player. Even so far as to recommend to friends that they avoid them altogether. High volume of production is no excuse for using components prone to failure.

(Perpetuating detached, existentialist ennui since 2001)

I had a 4th gen 40gig that had hard drive failure 4 times. Apple UK has finally offered me a 5th gen 60gig iPod (it still has AppleCare) because the latest replacement is broken again. Another 5 to 10 business days wait for the new unit though, I hope I have better luck with it.

Actually Apple have so far sold 42 million iPods and I suspect they might have a bigger defect rate that 0.1%, let's say 0.5%, giving a total of a possible 210,00 defective iPods, still not that many really.
