Hey all, I recently changed my color calibration a bit on my iMac, and when I restarted OS X for some other reason, the monitor is very dim. I set the brightness and contrast to 100% from system preferences, and that maximum is rather dim.

It seems to be getting dimmer every time I start up too.

Does it do it in OS 9 also? It could be a problem with the PAV board (slot loading iMacs) or the video board (tray loading)

yep, it's the video board, according to "Power Mac Pac" in Portland, OR (Apple Support sez: BUY A NEW IMAC), and I can have it replaced for a paltry $170.

Grr, everything works, but the monitor is SO DIM

I don't think you said which iMac you have.
if it's an earlier one, 233-333mhz, you can simply use an external monitor with a Griffin Technology MacPnP adapter to get around the problem. My wife has a 17" monitor on her iMac.

If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

I have a 400mhz iMac DVSE and I've had this problem before. It was a faulty analog board, which I had replaced for around $200. It worked fine for a while and then the new one went kaput so I had to get it replaced(for free as it was still under store warranty). Since then, other than one time when I started the iMac up, it has worked flawlessly. My situation seeemd to be getting worse, so it may be worth replacing.

Cheers
