I'm a die hard PC gamer but I happened to blow my CPU up last friday so I'm stuck with my ibook until this friday when my new stuff comes. I have warcraft3 tft and ut2k4 demo on here but I'm sick of them. Headed over to macgamefiles.com and downloaded americas army.

requirements:
• 1.25GHz G4 Processor (700MHz G4 Processor at minimum)
• 512 megs of RAM (256 Megs of RAM at minimum)
• 1 gigabyte of hard drive space
• GeForce4 or Radeon 8500. (GeForce2 or Radeon 7500 at minimum)

Is "at minimum" the minimum needed to load the damned installer? I'm running a 1.2g4 and a 9200 mobility. Last I checked the 9200 was almost as good as the 8500, unless the mobility flat out sucks. After waiting 5 years for AA to load up I set 800x600 lowest graphics quality, HW T&L off, shadows off, everything else off to. Bilinear filtering and stuff. Runs like CRAP. I'm assuming it's around 10 fps on the first training level Any good mac games that will run? I'm getting sick of frozen throne and macMAME and it's only tuesday...

I've seen overclocking on an ibook before, how do I do it? I know there's a software OC tool for the gfx, what's it called? What about the CPU?

EDIT:
Just downloaded ATIccelerator II and it picked up my 9200 mobility fine. 183/190 stock clocks... no wonder it's so slow. Fun time

What did you overclock them to and what FPS are you getting now? And your running AA 2.5 right?

P.S. My situation is kind of like yours, I only have my ibook (which is 1.07 GHz early 2004 with 512 mb of RAM) but i'm buliding a gaming PC and my stuff hasn't gotten here yet, mostly because it hasn't quite been ordered yet

AA 2.5 yes, I'm about to give this a shot. I had to eat and do some other stuff. ANYWAY I did some searching and saw that a 9200 mobility is clocked 5-10% higher than the 9000 mobility which is clocked at 250/230... Looks like apple did some underclocking I read they underclocked the 9600s in powerbooks on the same page I found ATIccelerator.

You sound like the expert here! What do you think I should overclock it to? processor: 230 Memory: 250? I would like to try this out tonight if you think you know what would be good! Thanks again, i can't wait to be playing AA 2.5, when i upgraded from 2.3 and it was super laggy i was on the verge of tears, exageration, but me and all my PC buddy's play all the time and i really didn't want to be left in the dust...

Well things are NOT looking good... Apple must be using some crappy 9200 chips I opened ut2k4 for a bit to see how hot the GPU got under load... 58C. Fan didn't come on though. I started cranking up the mem clock to 230 (which is apparently stock) and I started getting lines all over by the time I got to 220. Scared the living crap out of me because I've never seen artifacts that bad on my PC, none the less in 2d.

I'm running 201/201 now without much a problem it seems but honestly I'm not sure how much this is worth it. It's not like a PC where I can just flick the power or hit reset if something happens. If I lose the gfx here I lose the entire 1255 dollar laptop

Forgot to mention everything still runs like crap. Is there any way to tweak OS X? Are there new drivers for the video?

Think it would be safe to try AA 2.5 on Processor: 200 And Memory: 210, sorry i'm just really scared, i've never done any internal mods to my iBook and I'm nervous...

I have no clue. I saw no performance difference so I'd say don't bother.

What's "windowServer" in my activity monitor? It seems to be eating up a lot of my CPU...

Played a bit of ut2k4 with no problems. temps after playing were 66c CPU and 63C GPU. With the fan on. Getting a bit warm... I got the same frame rates at 640x480 as I did 1025x768 pretty much. Seems like I'm CPU limited here. 1.2ghz G4 just can't handle it

well my 1.07 GHz was running AA 2.5 OKAY... at best but much better than before, at processor: 212.63 and Memory: 221.63, and on the OpenMark OpenGL Benchmark ( http://www.giofx.net/osx/index.htm ) i was getting around 47 FPS at 139392 triangles, and how do you get your compy to show the FPS during AA 2.50? And I also have my iBook proped up on 2 decks of cards and 1 VHS cassette, so it's 1"-2.5" off the desk, to help proper ventalation, if your having some heat problems you should try it. I am very happy,

doing that was very scary as well, lol, but I was going to upgrade my HDD but then i decided to get a gaming pc like i said earlier, check out the stuff i'm going to order... I'm very proud of my choices actually...

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145440
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102578
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822140167
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822140167
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811195004
dvd-rom: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151214
Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813186056

What do you think? I wanted F.E.A.R. to be my benchmark, wether i play it or not, just so it would be cutting edge and EXTREMELY CHEAP.

I prefer Crucial but Corsair works too.

X700 is fine; a dead heat with the 6600 for performance (although I generally prefer nVidia's drivers).

Your CPU link goes to your hard drive. Socket 754 is a dead end anyway.

40GB hard drive is a waste of metal. For $7 more you can double the size. Go with Seagate for a 5 year warranty.

Cases with windows make mduell cry. Please don't connect the light inside it.

For another $20 you can get the fastest DVD burner on the market. Something to think about.

Foxconn makes mduell cry. Cheap poop down there with Biostar, ECS, and PCChips. Look at ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, and Tyan.

Oh god... 40gb hdd and 2mb cache? SLOWWWWWWW and tiny. x700 sucks, and that case is ugly. Not to mention the PSU in that is garbage and could easily take out your entire system. Keep saving and get something that doesn't suck... 754 is dead and slow as mduell said.

cheap NF4 board from asus, ECS, gigabyte, or chaintech (60-90)
6800gs video card (200)
1gb value ram (80)
a GOOD case and PSU (150+)
a normal hard drive that has more than no room and an 8mb cache (80)
dvd burner (40)
3200+ venice CPU (160)

That's only ~800 and pretty good. If you can't afford 800 dollars for a gaming PC then you'd be far better off buying an xbox360 or something...

Actually how about this CPU and the HDD that comes with it?::: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103461

same mobo
same RAM
same GPU
same Case
and
same dvd drive

all comes to $481.03 (without shipping ~$20)

But then what CPU cooler should i get with it....? Sadly this CPU doesn't come with one....

Not bad for an extremly budget system.... from my Point of view.

Don't spend more on the CPU than GPU for a gaming box.

754 is dead and slow. Save up money and get something like I reccomended. At 500 dollars you'd be FAR happier than an xbox 360 then a computer that can hadly run todays games at decent settings, none the less tomorrows games that will be even more demanding. Unreal3 engine will bring top of the line computers of today to their knees.
