If you buy the iMac then you have a pair of decent speakers built into the unit, but what if you also have a pair of external speakers + sub? Wouldn't it be ideal to use both sources at the same time? How would that be possible in OS X?

How would it be ideal? The external speakers would just sound better anyway. But I'm not aware of a way to do this... doesn't seem impossible.

Email the guys who wrote Detour.

Detour allows you to set an app to send its audio to a specific output - maybe they could make it possible to have the audio sent to two outputs? They might be able to just tell you if its technically possible.
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

are you on tiger? if so, you can try to set up an aggregate device. open Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup, and in the menu select "Open Aggregate Device Editor". just click on the help button for further instructions ... with that you can set up one virtual audio device that features all of your available ins/outs ... i had something similar to what you intend by accident, so i think it should be doable.

more speakers doesn't neccessarily mean better.

get some good external speakers and you'll be good to go!

Would it work to run an audio splitter line from the speaker system back to audio in on the computer ? Not a software answer or question but it may work, I don't know.

I tried creating an aggregate device with little success, I was unable to make all speakers sound off with my Soundsticks attached. It seems when u aggregate the device it says that it needs 4 channels of sound and any attempt to stream channels 1 and 2 to both sets of speakers results in the computer giving an "Overlapping channels" error. If anyone has seen a solution for this let me know.
