I have limited hope that anyone can help me with this, as google hasn't, but here it goes... I remember playing an RPG on my nintendo a long time ago but I can't remember what the game was called. All I can remember, besides that it was an RPG, was that there was this "rainbow" item you were suppose to find by figuring out a number of steps from a certain location on the world map. I also remember that after crossing a bridge, there were some bad ass ogre's that would kick your ass if you weren't strong enough. If I recall correctly, they were the same bad guys as on the other side, but they had some color modification like silver or gold, etc.

With my limited description, does anyone have an idea?

I typed up a response, but had to leave the computer before I submitted it. Now I see you already have the answer. Oh well. DW was my first RPG.

Sweet! Dragon warrior.

Anyone else get that game for free as part of subscribing to Nintendo Power? Man. That was an exciting day when it came. Everything else was second to that game. That made me love RPGs...

I loved that game too. Not too long ago I had to buy another NES off ebay cause I couldn't get the one from my brother back lol. I had the urge to play Bionic Commando so I got the NES and the game, now you want to make me play DW again. Didn't they have a sequal to it?

Yep. The series was always named Dragon Quest in Japan, but Enix renamed it Dragon Warrior for the States for some reason.

Before anyone else answers- the game you are thinking of is Dragon Warrior. I personally enjoyed DW 2 better, tho.

They renamed it Dragon Warrior in the states because the name "Dragon Quest" was already copyrighted in the states. That copyright expired and Enix hopped on it, which is why we have Dragon Quest VIII and not Dragon Warrior VIII.
