In actuality, China represents a huge potential danger. We should take a long range view of what is going on with them. Not only from a military standpoint or from the population disparities, not just because their projected need of natural resources is going to place a huge demand on the already strained supplies (which prompted them to buy Canadian tar sand fields and why they are going to the moon to help augment with other sources of energy), but their economy!

Did you know our balance of exchange is waaaay out of balance. We send them BILLIONS of dollars a year more than the send us because THEY are a cheap manufacturing nation and we all flock to WalMart to buy those cheap Chinese products to save money.

But this is at the expense of American manufacturers.

Eventually China might be able to make good on Kruschev's threat to bury us economically.

They are our greatest nightmare...as if we didn't have enough problems to worry about.

I did real estate a few years ago and got a call from a guy who had been manufacturing soft cases for strings musical instruments in Boston for decades. He said he was approached by a few Chinese businessman who had already taken all of his products and made exact duplicates. He was quoted a manufactured and shipped to his door price which was less than his cost to simply buy the fabric used to manufacture in Boston. He was closing the 20+k s/f facility and wanted about 2k s/f just to be able to say they were somewhat made in America.

Mexican blankets sold by hawkers at the Tijuana border are now manufactured in China.

China by 2020 will demand all of the worlds current capacity to produce oil.
China consumes more resources than any country in the world. US leads in one category, but is expected to be overtaken by China shortly.

The average Chinese personal income is nothing in comparison to ours in the US, but by 2020 might approach us, and when that does(and even before) they will be consuming goods at a pace comparable to the US. How many cars, fridges, tvs, computers, etc... will that be, and what are the ramifications of that demand ecologically from a country which really couldn't care less about those ramifications. The Chinese are reaching around the globe and planting the seeds of long term investments in an attempt to purchase the raw materials in needs to continue to grow. Attempting to buy oil companies is only the most glaring example.

One economist stated that less than 5% of the Chinese population is doing all of this manufacturing, but the demand for more workers is growing. Imagine if the figure/output grows from 5% to say 10-15%.

They have a perfect system. Over a billion potential workers, pay them next to nothing(in some cases nothing as in prisons), suppress free thought and dissent, lie to the world about worker health standards, and flood the world with product prices other countries cannot possibly compete with without giving their citizens basic health/safety standards and wages people can raise families with.

I'll wager to next war will be China against the West. I won't wager on who'll win.

Purchasing power parity is only useful in comparing the relative standards of living between countries, but it's an artificial inflator of actual buying power. The Chinese must still buy their Apple iPods and Boeing 747s at market exchange rates.

The Chinese are brilliant at long term strategy, but poor at human interaction. So given their economic and military abilities, they would own us eventually because America's fiscal accounting is akin to domestic violence. But in the meantime their social problems will escalate. It will be interesting to see which happens first, America's economic implosion or China's social revolution.

According to one of my Japanese co-worker you have to watch out for the Chinese. They have these undergound cities, hidden from view, where they kidnap japanese people and force them to teach Japanese to Chinese people for an eventualy takeover.

I tried not to laugh, and tried even harder to not to remind her that Japan invaded China.
