I have 2 ram chips at 256mb in my powerbook totaling 512mb. I recently ordered a gig stick of samsung ram... I will be able to keep in 1 stick of 256 to make my total ram 1.25gb right? I don't have to take out both 256 chips do I?

I had a 512mb dimm in my PB and I installed a 1gig dimm along with it to bring me to 1.5gigs without any problems. However, I've been told that you should put the bigger stick in first, and the smaller stick second, as you want the bigger stick to be the "primary" one. Not sure what is the basis behind this, but it worked for me.

Well, the PB stacks its two dimms of ram. When you open up the little hatch, the two dims are ontop of one another. The deepest one is the primary one and the one superficial to it is the secondary one. So... since I had 512mb installed from the factory, it was stuck in my primary (deepest) slot. I took it out, put in my 1gig dimm, then put the 512 chip ontop of it.

I hope that makes sense. I don't even know if it affects anything...

I know techs seems to prefer to put the largest module(s) the first slot(s), and any additional module(s) in the next slots, in descending order of size.

Putting the largest RAM sticks in the lowest numbered slots is like rubber chicken voodoo: it doesn't do anything, but if gives you that warm fuzzy feeling.

I just installed it and put it in the lowest numbered slot, cause it did give me that warm fuzzy feeling... anyways, I noticed a huge difference from 512 to 1.25... I can't believe I didn't upgrade sooner. Especially because I'm using programs like After Effects, CS2, and flash.
