The Apple Store just went back up, and theres already a newer MBP - a 2.16 Ghz Model. For $300 though, not really worth it for the extra 166 mhz....

You're missing the really important point -- they've gotten rid of the lower end 1.67Ghz model and created a faster top-end model (which can also be further upgraded to 2.16Ghz). Which means that everyone who has preordered MacBooks will be getting a faster model than they ordered. One does wonder if this might be a way to try an make up for delays in shipping though...

Yeh I just realised that! lol. I do wonder if people will still get the 1..67 models though, seeing that it is what they ordered, or if Apple will be cool and give everyone 1.83 models. I think the second option is more likely, as it seems to make no sense to even produce a 1.67 model now. I don't think the upgrade on the higher end MBP from 2.0 ghz to 2.16 ghz is worth it for $300 though

I know it's the wrong forum, but maybe this'll leave some breathing room to allow for a 1.67Ghz Core Duo on the iBook (at least the high-end of any Good-Better-Best series). Or maybe the Core Solo isn't running very well so they had to do something for the lower-end models.
Just speculation, I know. But this *is* nifty news.

Even if it sounds awkward, but maybe Intel has so many T2300 orders that they can supply the T2400/T2500 in better quantities. Just guessing, though.

Ooo yeah I never thought of that. IIRC, does the Core Duo not run one 'speed' slower than the 1.67 Ghz, like at 1.5 Ghz? If so, this would be perfect, as it would provide a clear distinction between the two product lines.
Just a side note, all the other online stores around the world are still online, and there is no word on the new speeds on any other Apple Site apart from the US site. Im guessing (and hoping) they are getting round to it now....

andreas_G4, who's post are you refering to? If mine, then the Core Duo runs at 1.67 Ghz, 1.83 Ghz, 2.0 Ghz, 2.16 Ghz (for definate), but I was wondering if it ran one 'notch' lower, like at 1.5 Ghz, cause' then it'd be a perfect fit for an iBook, which could be given that instead of a core solo / celeron

Oooo that is HARSH!! I agree, how can they update a machine that has not already shipped?! If I had an order on a 1.67 model, there would be no doubt about it that I would cancel it. I would suffer the extra waiting time, as I would not want an outdated machine as soon as I got it. SHAME ON YOU APPLE!
And I also don't get why they would want to produce the 1.67 model to give to people who have alredy ordered them. My guess is that thy are sitting in a warehouse somewhere, ready to go.

You should be OK - even if you ordered the day they were announced. From the press release:
"All models of the new MacBook Pro will ship with faster Intel Core Duo processors than previously announced, delivering even greater performance at no additional cost. The $2,499 model now includes a 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, up from the previously announced 1.83 GHz, and will begin shipping this week."
My guess would be whoever you spoke to at Apple didn't understand what they were talking about.

What? I certainly understand people that ordered early and get a lower MHz model, but it is not that Apple is giving you less than one ordered for his money. I think you have a problem with development pace when you think that a 1.66 GHz Core Duo is outdated.
EDIT: good point, GoDucks. Seems there is no issue at all. I'm glad that everyone gets the higher clocked CPUs.

With Motorola, Apple had to remove the top end and add a lower-end. With Intel, Apple can remove the low end and add a top end.
We're living in good times.
Thanks Intel.

Oh, it's Valentine's day, Apple. Thanks for letting us know you care. I'd love an email though asking whether I'd like to spring for the 2.16 since it hasn't shipped yet...preserving a place in line.

Thanks Intel.
That was also a thought of mine. It is a good signal for the future of the relationship.
BTW, do any of the other manufacturers upgrade their products? That would be interesting to see if it is an Apple only move or industry wide.

Yeah, we've got a discussion on the shipping over here if anyone would like to comment: Shipping Discussion The latest development being that the 2.0's are shipping this week and the 1.83's are shipping next week.
What I wonder is whether this makes a difference on the bus that's used in these machines. I can't find any info on that. Anyone else?

it's obvious that apple was just underclocking the chips and using samples lower rated samples. Now that they figured out that the batches they got work fine at 1.8 they decided to run with it instead of underclocking them to 1.67 (which is a speed intel never shipped)

I wonder if that also means they got better battery life than the suspected, meaning they could push the chips more?

Absolutely correct, but Intel is charging $ 209 more for the 2.13 than for the 2.0 GHz, so Apple isn't overcharging customers, I think. Of course, Apple doesn't pay list price, since they certainly order more than 1k units, but you get the idea…

It's kinda refreshing. If these were G5 PowerBooks, how much you wanna bet they would've been dropped by 300MHz?

I certainly appreciate the upgrade. This is great, Apple is really trying to show that it loves us here on Valentine's day. I see no reason at all to complain if you want the fastest unit and have the 2.0 currently on order. It sounds as though we may get the option to go up to the higher one anyway (I'm more than happy with the 2.0 I believe).

This is great news indeed, but I'm more curious as to WHY the sudden upgrade though.
Perhaps this is a sign that we won't be seeing any revisions of the 15" MBP for awhile?

I highly doubt that. I see this as a PR move designed to disappate all irriated feelings if there were to be a "late shipment."
I know my order got deferred to the February 28th shipment (It use to say Feb 15th), but guess what, I'm happier than ever.

I'm pretty sure that this isn't just a PR move, as it's WAY more effort to do this than to have people be frustrated by a couple week delay. Plus, I bet they could've forcasted this delay a while ago. What is a PR move is the time they chose to tell us.

...Unless the 1.83 and 1.6 GHz models weren't even in production yet for all this time, allowing Apple to swap the chips.
Or maybe it's simply to break the 2 GHz barrier?
Or maybe to pave the way for the 13"/17" models so that when those are released the 15" won't be stuck with what seems to be obsolete hardware?
I don't know.
