Hi all. I just broke down & ordered a core solo mini. From what I have read, the 2 dimm slots are filled with 2x256. I'm planning on adding ram so:

Do Dimms need to be installed in matched pairs or can I remove one of the 256 and add 512 or 1 GB stick?

TIA

J

They do not have to be installed in pairs, although you may see a performance increase if they are (since it supports dual channel).

Just a word of advice, if you don't already know, to install RAM in the new mini, you have to remove quite a bit of 'stuff' to get to the slots - its NOT as easy as the G4 mini
iMac Core Duo 1.83 Ghz | 1.25GB RAM | 160HD, MacBook Core Duo 1.83 Ghz | 13.3" | 60HD | 1.0GB RAM

How big exactly is the "performance increase" from using a pair of matched DIMMs?

I'm looking to upgrade an intel mini as well. If it's not going to take much of a performance hit, I'd like to replace one of the 256MB DIMMs with a 1GB and leave the other original 256MB stick in there.

I'm under the impression that Intel minis need RAM in pairs. Are you saying that the mini will run with mismatched RAM, but that it is optimized for matching RAM in the two slots?

No, you do not need to install memory in pairs. It may or may not help with performance (depends what you do/how you use it) to install in pairs.
