In any case, if you are in Germany, you don't have to resort to desperate measures and drink Bud. Depending on where you are, you can get all kinds of decent beers

Whilst on Germany - am booked in for a stag weekend to Hamburg in Sept.

Anyone recommend an ok hotel in the Reeperbahn area? [a few chaps have already booked into The Stern -which is 1 star and a little dodgy imo!]

Budget of 150eur for 2 nights is about the max [room share].

Cheers

Hmmm... Banning a drink which many, many people like drinking because you don't like it. You chaps in Germany never really got past that whole fascism thing, did you?

Now shut your mouths and remember who won the war.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.

I was in the Hansehof Hotel 2 months ago, quite old but nice cosy/gemuetlich. It's 400 feet netxt/parallel to the Reeperbahn. My girlfriend booked through a agency though, that was acually cheaper as we found out when we looked at the prices there. You will find a couple of newer hotels next to it if you like that.
I'm-a trying to wonder, wonder, wonder why you, wonder, wonder why you act so.

I know that the youths hostel isn't far from the Reeperbahn. It has a beautiful look over the harbor. I am sure they also have single or double rooms. Directly on the Reeperbahn will not be fun. Too lound and ugly to sleep there.

I stayed in the "Stern" when I moved to Hamburg 6 years ago - it's ok if you only wanna sleep there but spend the rest of the day somewhere else...

I'd rather recommend the Instant Sleep down my street if you are young and want to stay in a better area than the Reeperbahn (which is just a few hundred meters away)!

The Hansehof is fine. My dad used to stay there when he came to visit.

Only problem is that the Simon-von-Utrecht-Str. is fairly heavy traffic, so if you're into sleeping with the window a crack open, then...well, you probably shouldn't book a hotel in teh red-light district at all, then, should you?

The youth hostel is located on Stintfang, about five minutes from the Reeperbahn by foot, and indeed comes with a view of the harbor.

Check Google Earth for maps.

When did that happen!? A hotel above the Rossi? Okay....

Reeperbahn is about a 15-minute walk from there.

And you're directly at the edge of the Schanzenviertel, which has turned into a really vile yuppie-latté-unemployed-dot-com-remnant-hip neighborhood in the past ten years.

As the German saying goes, I wouldn't want to hang dead over a fence there. Haven't had a drink there in years.

Come on, it is a 1+1 lane road! It is a city. The Reeperbahn is what a 3+3 lane? The only annoying thing was the billboard near my window . Nontheless, I slept well.

Reeperbahn is 2+2, though currently two-lane one-way and a HUGE construction site.

You win. Whatever, I liked Hamburg very much. Something I would not have thought. (Miniatur Wunderland was slightly dissapointing, but Tanz der Vampire was outstanding, against all odds, city live was great)

?

I wasn't trying to out-e-penis you.

The Hansehof is a perfectly fine hotel.

I just used to live right on the next corner, and I found the constant traffic on Simon-von-Utrecht quite annoying.

Just in case anyone would need help, this is what my plans ended up being.

1. Plane - Lufthansa Round trip $798.00

I thought this would be more expensive, I learned that because its a big airline they would be more expensive. I searched for a few days and the effort paid off. Only 1 layover (1/2 hour) and other then that I advise to keep shopping. I found that this trip was a special from Newark (hours drive from me) to Berlin but I modified the trip under that special and still got a deal even leaving from multiple locations. Who woulda thought. I had to cut my leave date to one day earlier but 4 days in Germany is just right for me.

2. Rental car - Booked by europcar.com - $270.00 for 4 days

This is what i wanted to avoid spending money on but I want to leave and go at my leisure, though I rented a gas car, I put in for a diesel car also in case one is available. Im figuring $300.00 for fuel to travel the miles i need to travel. Expensive but I like to drive.

3. Hotel - Estimate $200.00

Well I found a town near the ocean where I will stay for a few days but I will wing the 4th day so I figure this is a good way to go. The hotels are cheap in Germany and some have good amenities some just the bare minimun. Some you have to share a bathroom with an entire floor. I got aroom with Internet, bathroom, TV, for $65.00 with free breakfast.

4. Food - estimate $175.00

Im not gonna eat in resuraunts all the time, just small cheap place or food on the go. I figure since I have free breakfast I will have something small for lunch and a modest dinner close to my hotel.

5. Misc. - $150.00

Im gonna try to keep my costs down on buying too much crap! I am bringing a medium sized backpack which has my laptop and clothes (summer time so I can pack light) and stuff a bought shirt or 2.

Well I hope this helps some of you out there planning a trip to Germany or outside the US. I had great help from http://www.ricksteves.com you may have seen his shows on PBS and his website is amazing. Great info for the nivice to experienced.

Take care and thanks for everones help, I leave on Saturday!!! woo hoo!!
