I am wondering if I have the macbook pro whine issue. The reason is that I have been hearing a light low frequency like sound coming from the lower left side of my MBP. Normally this wouldn't be much of problem, but the thing is that I hear this sound go away for the most part whenever I have a USB drive plugged in. That also the sound also goes down some when photobooth is on. Now the reason why I am questioning if this is the true whine issue or not, is because I heard that the true whine sound is quite loud, and comes from the right side of the MBP. So anyways I just want to get down to the bottom of this.

I find swiching off one of the CPU cores rectifies this issue.

That is the whine issue, and it does come from the left. There's a different one, I think, that comes from the right (the display whine?) for some people. It's either not always very loud, or it bothers some people more than others.

Turning off a CPU core is probably the worst possible solution, as it will decrease both performance and battery life (test results previously posted here). If you want to get rid of the whine, find that script that ramps up CPU usage just enough to get rid of the whine without using too much extra power. Or use the mirror widget trick.

Download the mirror widget, open it in dashboard for a few seconds and close it. The whine (CPU whine associated with running on battery) will go away until your next reboot. The CPU whine goes away on AC, but can be heard on battery. It also is independent of LCD brightness unlike the bad inverter whine which is heard any brightness but full on or full off and is fixed by Apple replacing the display inverter board.

This may help something with the display inverter ( copy and pasted from the site)

Mike, For those having issues with the display related whine I found a post on the Apple Discussions describing the repair and part number used to replace the display inverter.
-William
" I received my MBP last week from Apple in Houston. I entered my service order on 10 Mar, they received my MBP on 14 Mar, waited for part 15 Mar, received part 17 Mar, shipped back to me 18 Mar, and 20 Mar I received it back. It looks good - I wanted to make sure no scratches etc.

The problem I had was the screen buzzing which was eliminated by turning brightness 0 or 100%. The service description:

Product was serviced by replacing the following
612-0020 ASSY, INVERTED (Inverter?),NCC,MBPRO15"
The bottom line is that it is FIXED! I never knew how quiet can be so soothing!
Peace, Eug "

A link would be helpfull. I have not noticed any battery drain due to the shut down of a core...
