I'm not sure if anyone asked this before (new to this forum) but....

Will MBP 2.0 support dual-layer DVD burning in the near future? How soon?

Yes. As soon as 9.5mm dual layer burners are available.

Probably as soon as Apple can find one that is as cheap and nasty as the one in the Intel iMacs ;-)

Yep, the 8X dual-layer Pioneer K04 in my PPC iMac works just fine. In fact, I think it'd be awesome if the MacBook Pro could fit one of these. It's 12.7 mm, so if the MBP could fit it, it could fit any other slot-load laptop drive out there, including the Blu-ray burners coming out soon.

Maybe the 17" will be thick enough to support the Blu-Ray's.

I just saw the 15" MBP for the first time at the store. Even though it's almost identical to the PB's, I swear it somehow managed to take my breath away. I wish A) it had a Dual-Layer, and B) that I could afford one.

Someday...oh yes, someday it will be mine.

If you visit Apple support discussions you will see the problems with the Matshita. Despite these posts there is no response from Apple!
Oh and did I mention the faulty hard drives? I'll let Harrisjamieh tell you about that one ;-)

On reflection, I don't think there was anything wrong with the seagate HD in my 1st iMac CD, it didnt slow the system at all, it was just too noisy for my liking!

Is the new one quieter or did you get a new problem on the replacement one? Always a risk!

I'm a little confused with the assumption that the MBP can't support a DL drive at this time. The last revision of 17" G4s did, correct? Weren't they the same thickness as the MBP?

Yes but 17", although about the same thickness as the new 15.4" mbp, has more area to put other components. The 15" is a tighter squeeze... that's the only rationalization I can come up with.

It's not only a rationalization, it's factually correct. Though the cases for the PB's and the MBP's look identical, the internal layout is completely different. Currently the MBP's cannot accomodate a thicker drive.

Yes the new one is much quieter, its a WD drive instead of a seagate
