Why? Is it a legality issue? Even if flip4mac works, i remember on my PPC when it plays wmv plugins the thing is off cneter and it doesn't look right.

Licensing. Microsoft offers licensing for all of the Windows Media Technologies, but Apple hasn't licensed any of them.

It has nothing to do with licensing. MS could very easily develop their own QuickTime plug-in for wmv playback and make it freely available but they choose not to - I'll leave it up to your own imagination as to why.

As for Apple licensing wmv from MS - why would they? wmv is a closed, proprietary format that competes with mpeg4 - not only would Apple have to pay MS to licence playback, but they would be promoting a competing technology to their own preferred online streaming format. In other words it makes no sense to Apple to have built-in support of their own creation for a competitor's format.

The Flip4Mac plug-in is just a convenient get out for MS to be able to say that they are still supported on Mac OS.

Because MS wants us to think that the only way to have a good multi-media computing experience is to go with Windows.

As for Apple licensing wmv from MS - why would they?
So that their customers can have a good multi-media computing experience...

Except for iTunes videos, mac users are almost completely shut out from the mainstream online movie viewing/renting services such as MovieLink and the various WMV DRM based pay-per view platforms.

wmv is a closed, proprietary format that competes with mpeg4
It also happens to be the dominant format for online movie services.

- not only would Apple have to pay MS to licence playback, but they would be promoting a competing technology to their own preferred online streaming format. In other words it makes no sense to Apple to have built-in support of their own creation for a competitor's format.
And Mac users are the ones who suffe while MS and Apple flex thier multimedia muscles.
We need to 'make it make sense' for Apple to provide full WMV support.

The Flip4Mac plug-in is just a convenient get out for MS to be able to say that they are still supported on Mac OS.
It is just as much Apples fault for not stepping-up and licensing WMV to provide a decent multi-media experience for its users.

One major stumbling block is that even if ether MS themselves, Apple or anyone else for that matter (via licensing) decided to make a WMV plugin, you still wouldn't be able to play a large amount of WMV/WMP content.
This is because MS doesn't/won't support OSX as an 'authorized platform' for it's DRM.
No WMA-DRM, no playback from the new movie studios download sites, Napster, and all the other commercial WMA/WMV sources. Even some of the 'free' WMV downloads require the DRM.

Here is a recent discussion on ARS about this very subject, with some MS links.

MS will have to change its tune when Apple's market share doubles. Itwon't have a choice...unless it hates its codecs and want to flush its multimedia crusade down the toilet.

'course, I'd be plenty happy if they did that since that's where WMV and WMA belong.

The rumors on whether or not MS will allow Apple to license the DRM for OSX (lack of SAP, etc) is a distraction from the ability to play non-restricted WMV.

Apple has already licensed WMA for iTunes (so you can import and transcode to MP3 or AAC). They've chosen not to license and implement WMV.
