I've got 2 friends in Iraq right now and we've been trying to get some stuff together to send over to them, but I've heard different things regarding what is allowed to be sent. An exgf of mine is in the AF and said you can get them in trouble if you send Playboy or any kind of porn. Anyone know if that's true or if it isn't really enforced? And any suggestions or stories of good stuff the guys might enjoy would be appreciated?
So far we've been thinking of sending:
playing cards
beef jerky
magazines (playboy and regular magazines)
instant camera
dvd's/cd's

Porn would be a bad idea, even if they weren't stationed in a Muslim country. I have heard soldiers from Iraq say they are pretty sick to death of jerky, peanuts and all that sort of pogie bait. Besides, the PX sells that. Ditto playing cards and so forth.
Consider sending them books. If they are fast readers they are probably bored silly by the selection available through the military. Here's a good web site: http://booksforsoldiers.com/

We had adopted a soldier and we were able to send requests for what they would like. We ended up receiving a very long letter telling us about herself and what should would like. She requested magazines, candy (but nothing pershible or that melts easily), toothpaste, toothbrush, deordant, chapstick, lotion, and other items. i remember she asked a for few specific items that were difficult to find there - like comfortable underware. i can't remember which website we used to 'adopt' a soldier but a quick search brought up several sites. We got a great response from her after she received her first care pack but after the second care package we found out she was discharged.

i send a lot of goofy **** to my friends...super balls, little puzzle games, play-do, hacky sacks, etc. they become big hits and make the rounds quickly. as for food, mostly individual pudding snacks, raisins, uhm...crackers too. man, can't think what was in the last box. oh, mini footballs; nurf or hard rubber are also big hits. toileries are also a good idea (soap, DO, lotion, etc)
pr0n will get found and removed. wiskey in vernor bottles will get found and removed. however, things such as maxim, victoria secret catalogs, etc are okay.
usps has special boxes for one price postage no matter what the weight is for mailing to solderies. i wanna say it is $9.90 or something similar.
gotta remember, there is lots of downtime and bordem strikes pretty quickly. what we think is dumb or childish makes them smile and turns into quite the game with them.

Risk 2210 and Monopoly, maybe a portable skeet shooting set and a few clay pigeons.

Dungeons & Dragons is popular.
Get them the 3.5 core rules plus a bag of dice and character sheets.
